  2. Forward Back Introduction to Hudson • May be born between 1570-1575 near London, Great Britain • Died 1611 out at sea • English nationality • An Explorer and Navigator • Very well educated

  3. Purposes for Exploration • First Voyage-to discover a passage by the North Pole t0 Japan/China • Second & Third Voyage-to discover a northwest passage through the Arctic waters north of Russia • Fourth Voyage-to discover a Northwest passage to the Orient Forward Back

  4. Difficulties Experienced on his Expeditions • Encountered storms and wind • On Henry Hudson's last voyage, when his crew demanded to go home, Hudson wanted to continue the voyage • Ship stranded in ice • Hudson’s crew was led to mutiny and put Hudson, his son, and other supporters in a small boat, left to die. • On Henry’s third voyage, King James I of England forbade Hudson to sail for England Forward Back

Forward Back First Journey- May 1607 • Ship: The Hopewell • Crew: 12 men • Supporter: English Muscovy Company • Route: Left from Gravesend, England • Sailed northwest of Greenland • Hit Spitsbergen (an island in Norway) and sailed west • Due to bad weather, changed course and sailed back to England.

  6. Forward Back Second Journey- April 1608 • Ship: Hopewell • Supporter: English Muscovy Company • Voyage: Left from Thames; • Sailed past Norway towards Russia; • Due to bad weather and conditions on the ship, he had to change course and head back to Gravesend, England

Forward Back Third Journey-April 1609 • Ship: Halfmoon • 20 crew members • Sponsor: Dutch United east India Company • Voyage: Left from Holland • First, went to Norway, then to Russia • Changed course and went west towards warmer waters • Sailed into George’s Harbor and explored the New World for a few days • Left and passed Jamestown and Manhattan • In November, Hudson decided to go home and arrived in Dartmouth, England

Forward Back Fourth Voyage- April 1610 • Ship: Discovery • Supporter: Muscovy Company • Voyage: Left St. Katherine’s Docks • Sailed up River Thames • Sailed past Scotland, Greenland, and Iceland • Reached Hudson Strait • Sailed South of James Bay • Reached the south most part of Hudson Bay • Got stuck in ice and suffered the winter with coldness, hunger, scurvy, and angry Natives • When the ice melted, Hudson wanted to sail further • This led the crew to mutiny

Forward Back Interesting Facts • Robert Bylot was one of Hudson’s crewmembers that took mutiny on Hudson • When Hudson reached Hudson Strait in his 4th voyage, he named the headlands Cape Digges and Cape Wolstenholme for important members of the Muscovy Company • Hudson’s crew was the first to survive in the Canadian Arctic

  12. Wrong or False Forward Back True William Baffin was part of Hudson’s crew. Hudson sailed on the “Halfmoon” on his 3rd voyage. Hudson made 4 voyages. Hudson’s first ship was called the “Hopeful.” R GHT!!! WRONG!!! Right Hudson left from Holland on April 1608. Hudson left from St. Katherine Docks on his 4th voyage. The Muscovy Company supported Hudson for 3 voyages. Hudson arrived in Dartmouth, England on his 2nd voyage.
