EGNOS Ground Segment Development EGNOS Ground Segment is made of • Four Mission Control Centers, hosting each • a Central Processing Facilities • a Central Control Facilities, • Collecting data from 34 RIMS Sites hosting • Branch A, used for Processing • Branch B, used for integrity checks • Branch C, to track specific GPS satellite failure modes • Feeding Six Land Earth Stations • Broadcasting EGNOS Messages to users via 3 GEO Satellites • All interconnected via real-time digital network

EGNOS Key Challenges • Ensure ionosphere (GIVE) and GPS integrity (UDRE) for a 15 years operational scenario, and still provide adequate availability (99%) and continuity (8x10-5/150 sec); • EGNOS SBAS formal certification for Safety of Life (institutional and technical issue); • EGNOS to penetrate in a large number of multi-modal markets reducing the time to service of Galileo; • EGNOS evolution after EGNOS V1 (service extension and GPS modernisation); • EGNOS and Galileo technical and service provision integration.

EGNOS is intended for multi-modal applications • EGNOS/SISNET for public bus transportation(NAVOCAP, France; and also GMV, Spain) • EGNOS dissemination through FM RDS in cars (TDF, France) • EUROCOPTER (Helicopter Emergency Medical Services, Germany/France) • EGNOS to support Precision Farming (Booz Allen, UK) • DELTA hybridationtest in airports (M3 systems, France, and also at Sweden) • EGNOS disseminations through DAB radios (BOSCH/ BLAUPUNKT, Germany) • Internet EGNOS transmission: SISNET Pocket PC PDA receiver (Finish Geodetic Institute, Finland) • EGNOS/SISNET to support blind pedestrian (GMV and ONCE Spain).

The deployment of the EGNOS infrastructureis close to complete • All 4 Master Control Centres (MCC) have been deployed; • All Navigation Land Earth Stations; (NLES) have been deployed; • 30 of the 34 RIMS are today deployed; • All 3 EGNOS Geostationary satellites are transmitting successfully; • EGNOS transmission/performances since Dec. 2003. Daily transmissions since July 2004. • EGNOS final functional/performance qualification planned end 2004. • ESA. ESA Receiver Workshop Conclusions. Paris 3.7.2003

  19. In parallel to the start of EGNOS operations, EGNOS needs to respond positively to the dynamic GNSS environment • EGNOS AOC is based on a MRD Document developed in 1998. This allows EGNOS V1 service provision in 2004 with excellent performances. • Since then, the GNSS environment has changed significantly: • Galileo programme • GPS Modernisation program (IIR-M, IIF) • New L1/L5 GEOs • Export opportunities for SBAS technology • GPS/SBAS L5 standardisation work • WAAS FOC program launched • EGNOS V2 concept

  26. Summary • EGNOS is the European SBAS and a first step towards GALILEO, the European SATNAV constellation. • EGNOS AOC (EGNOS V1) is close to conclusion. EGNOS Initial performances are very good, with accuracies 1-2m and good APV availabilities • Almost Continuous transmission since July 2004 for the three EGNOS GEOs; formal EGNOS qualification end 2004, delivering a very valuable service to users • In parallel to operations and without any operational interruption, EGNOS will keep modernising and improving services in 2004/2008 (EGNOS V2), in response to new identified needs (e.g. Galileo and GPS modernisation, service extension). • Step I of this modernisation (2004-2005) has been approved. This includes the release of EGNOS V2.1 early 2006, with 2 main new missions: service extension (south/east) and non-GEO service multi-modal provision (INSPIRE). • Step 2, to be confirmed in 2005, includes EGNOS extension in Africa (2007) and SBAS L1/L5 services (2008).
