  1. Ankle Bracing

  2. Ankle bracing is a vital part of recovery for ankle sprains. An athlete will start with a brace that splints the joint and move onto a more functional brace. The two most used braces we have used with baseball are the air-gel splint and ASO ankle brace.

  3. The air-gel splint can be used when an acute injury has occurred to allow added protection to the joint. Air can be added by using the flap at the top and pumping air using a hand pump.

  4. The splintis applied with the stirrups going up the medial and lateral leg. Observe to see the amount of compressionis appropriate.

  5. The straps are secured tightly to splint the joint.

  6. The straps are then pulled tightly to secure the ankle.

  7. Another commonly used brace is the ASO brace. It allows more range of motion and is often used during sport specific activities. The foot is insertedinto the brace with the laces in front as if tying a shoe.

  8. The laces are then tied and secured.

  9. Finally the support straps are wrapped around the foot and ankle to provide added support and secure the laces.
