  5. Goals • Re-establish Linac Operations • Transport e- to main dump (~14 GeV, 200 pC, 10 Hz) • Verify all new components (BPMs, screens, magnets, wires, software, etc) • Verify all new photon diagnostics (FEE) • Commission MPS & BCS • Fully characterize electron beam • Align undulator using beam-based method • Characterize X-ray radiation • Establish CD-4 flux level in FEE http://www-ssrl.slac.stanford.edu/lcls/commissioning/documents/2009_commissioning-goals.doc

  6. Pre-Beam Checkout • Check magnet polarities • Check cable connections • Check component serial numbers • Check component installation orientation • Check controls function (power, motion, readback, etc) • Check water connections • Label all components, etc… 51 pages, 2000 checks, 70% done Separate list for undulator… 204 pages, 7200 checks, 10% done? http://www-ssrl.slac.stanford.edu/lcls/commissioning/documents/pre-beam-check-list-2009.doc

  7. Radiation Surveys • Beam to D2 in BSY (done) – survey BTHW, etc. • Beam to und. stopper – survey BTH head house, mazes, etc. • 14-GeV beam to main dump – survey bldg. 921, FEE-wall, etc. • 4-GeV beam to main dump - survey bldg. 921, FEE-wall, etc. DRAFT >1 week required when first beam transported into new halls (BTH, UH, Dump) http://www-ssrl.slac.stanford.edu/lcls/commissioning/documents/part1_uncominitial-11-13-08.doc

  8. Manpower • LCLS Commissioning Phase-III: Nov. 2008 through July 2009 (36 wks) • 3 shifts per day (1-2 physicists 8:00-16:00 & 16:00-24:00, with operations coverage 24:00-8:00, unless more required) 21 LCLS Physicists (all with LCLS experience) …plus new help from PEP-II and beyond Axel Brachmann (ASD) Dave Dowell (consultant - available 1 week/month) Franz-Josef Decker (ASD) Yuantao Ding (PPA) Paul Emma Joe Frisch Sasha Gilevich (laser) Steve Edstrom (laser) Greg Hays (laser) Philippe Hering (laser) Zhirong Huang (PPA) Cecile Limborg (on leave until May, 2009) Henrik Loos Rick Iverson Heinz-Dieter Nuhn Daniel Ratner (graduate student/PPA) Jim Turner Jim Welch Bill White (laser) Juhao Wu Dao Xiang (post-doc, PPA) Kirk Bertsche Sasha Novokhatski Jerry Yocky + LBNL Sasha Zholents Bill Fawley + Trieste Simone Spampanati + DESY, PSI, …? + Operations, Controls, Power-conversion, RF, engineering, etc

  10. Manpower and Organization With 36 total weeks, this distributes into the following weekly work load for each group (averaged over 36-week run). LCLS Physicists: ~1 shift/wk (peak is higher depending on task) Operators (3/shift): Operate accelerator and support commissioning Chief Operator (EOIC): Leads operations crew during shift Program Deputy: Makes daily decisions on program Program Coordinator: (PE)Sets long-term program, shifts, access, etc. Controls Deputy: Liaison to controls group to solve daily problems Commiss’ng Engineer: Coordinate access/repair days and direct work

  11. Important Dates for 2008/2009 Commissioning • Nov. 3, 2008: Startup (establish beam to end of linac again) • Dec. 10, 2008: Install laser-heater undulator (1 day) • Dec. 15, 2008: First beam through LTU & to dump? (survey) • Dec. 19, 2008: SLAC shuts down for holidays • Jan. 5, 2009: Startup again (establish beam in LTU & dump) • March 2, 2009: Install 25 undulators + PPS re-cert. (~2 wks) • May 14, 2009: First x-ray beam in FEE • July 2009: Photons in NEH • August 2009: Start AMO Experiment • December 2009: Downtime for holidays + PPS re-cert. (~2 mo.)
