    1. TERRAIN AWARENESS & WARNING SYSTEM (TAWS) QUIT PUSHING AND USE THE THING!

    4. WHY ARE WE TALKING ABOUT THIS? YOU SPENT SEVERAL HUNDRED (POSSIBLY THOUSAND) DOLLARS ON A TECHNOLOGY THAT CAN EASILY SAVE YOUR LIFE…BUT YOU DON’T USE IT

    8. CONTROLLED FLIGHT INTO TERRAIN (CFIT) 17% OF ALL AVIATION FATALITIES MOST COMMON DURING VFR CONDITIONS AT NIGHT COMMON DURING MARGINAL VFR CONDITIONS, EVEN FOR INSTRUMENT RATED PILOTS TAKE THE FAA “CFIT RISK ASSESSMENT” IN ADVIOSRY CIRCULAR AC 61-134

    9. AMERICAN AIRLINES FLIGHT 965 DECEMBER 20, 1995 CALI, COLUMBIA BOEING 757 163 PEOPLE ON BOARD CONFUSION IN ROUTING INHOSPITABLE TERRAIN TERRAIN WARNING SYSTEM WAS WORKING PILOTS IGNORED THE WARNING

    10. WHAT TO TAKE HOME FROM THIS SEMINAR… A STRANGE, UNEXPLAINABLE DESIRE TO SPEND 10 MINUTES READING ABOUT THAT FANCY EQUIPMENT YOU PAID A LOT OF MONEY FOR THAT “CAPTAIN MINDSET” AGAIN IN MANAGING YOUR INITIAL CLIMB, OR FINAL DESCENT INTO UNFAMILIAR, UNKNOWN, DARK, OR OBSCURED TERRAIN AN ENHANCED LEVEL OF SITUATIONAL AWARENESS FROM SOMETHING YOU’VE ALREADY PAID FOR

    11. DATABASE UPDATES KEEPING YOUR GPS DATABASE UP TO DATE IS CRITICAL GARMIN 430/530 SERIES ON A SEPARATE DATA CARD EACH 2 MONTHS FOR OBSTACLES & 1 PER YEAR FOR TERRAIN ON THE INTERNAL HARD DRIVE OF PORTABLE UNITS $50 RIGHT HERE @ MODERN AVIONICS

    12. TERRAIN GENERAL TOPOGRAPHIC FEATURES OF THE EARTH DATABASE COMPILED FROM YEARS OF GPS GROUND MAPPING OPERATIONS YOUR CURRENT GPS POSITION (LATERAL & VERTICAL) IS COMPARED TO THIS DATABASE

    13. OBSTACLES RADIO TRANSMISSION ANTENNAS LARGE WATER TOWERS TALL BUILDINGS COMPILED FROM ALL OBSTRUCTIONS OVER 100’ AGL, KNOWN BY THE FAA YOUR CURRENT GPS POSITION (LATERAL & VERTICAL) IS COMPARED TO THIS DATABASE

    14. WHAT YELLOW MEANS THE TERRAIN/OBSTACLE IS BETWEEN 100’ AND 1,000’ BELOW THE AIRPLANE ISSUED TO THE PILOT AS A CAUTION REDUCED SAFETY MARGIN POTENTIAL HAZARD IF COURSE IS UNCHANGED OR ALTITUDE IS MAINTAINED

    15. CAUTION BEGIN TO TAKE POSITIVE CORRECTIVE ACTION AT THIS TIME IF DESCENDING, STOP THE DESCENT, BEGIN A CLIMB IF NECESSARY IF LEVEL, BEGIN A CLIMB CONSIDER A TURN UNTIL ALERT GOES AWAY GO TO THE “TERRAIN PAGE” TO BETTER IDENTIFY THE THREAT

    16. TERRAIN CAUTION

    17. TERRAIN PAGE VIEW (WITH OBSTACLES)

    19. WHAT RED MEANS THE TERRAIN/OBSTACLE IS EITHER ABOVE YOU, AT YOUR ALTITUDE, OR WITHIN 100’ BELOW YOU ISSUED TO THE PILOT AS A WARNING THE AIRCRAFT WILL IMPACT TERRAIN OR OBSTACLE IF COURSE IS NOT CHANGED IMMEDIATELY, OR ALTITUDE IS NOT INCREASED IMMEDIATELY

    20. WARNING TAKE IMMEDIATE CORRECTIVE ACTION PERFORM “CFIT ESCAPE MANEUVER” CLIMB UNTIL ALERT GOES AWAY GO TO THE “TERRAIN PAGE” TO BETTER IDENTIFY THE THREAT

    21. OBSTACLE WARNING

    22. TERRAIN PAGE VIEW

    24. DAY VFR OK…WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET BUT DO YOU SEE EVERYTHING? ANTENNAS & TOWERS COLOR-BLENDING TERRAIN (WINTER) HOW MUCH OF YOUR ATTENTION IS DEVOTED TO WATCHING FOR OBSTRUCTIONS? HOW FAMILIAR ARE YOU WITH THIS NEW AIRPORT?

    26. NIGHT VFR CAN BE INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS HAVE YOUR TERRAIN PAGE UP & PAY ATTENTION TO IT COMBINE THIS INFORMATION WITH WHAT YOU SEE ON YOUR CHARTS

    28. IFR UNNECESSARY ALERTS ARE AUTOMATICALLY INHIBITED WHEN AN APPROACH PROCEDURE IS ACTIVATED (430/530) TERRAIN ALERTS STILL EXIST IF YOU WANDER OFF COURSE OR FLY TOO LOW DO NOT IGNORE THESE ALERTS

    32. CFIT ESCAPE MANEUVER BEGIN AN IMMEDIATE CLIMB ALL AVAILABLE POWER THROTTLE(S) FULL FORWARD CLIMB @ VX MOST ALTITUDE GAINED OVER DISTANCE FLOWN TURNING IS DISCOURAGED UNLESS DAY VMC ALLOWS OBSTRUCTION CLEARANCE REDUCED VERTICAL COMPONENT OF LIFT UNKNOWN SURROUNDING TERRAIN CONTINUE CLIMB UNTIL ALERT DISAPPEARS OR VISUAL OBSTRUCTION CLEARANCE CAN BE MAINTAINED

    33. TRAINING & PRACTICE TAKE YOUR AIRPLANE OUT ON A VFR DAY AND SEE THE “VISUAL” OF WHAT THE SYSTEM IS TELLING YOU ABOUT DESCEND TOWARD THE GROUND, SEE THE ALERT FLY TOWARD AN OBSTACLE, SEE THE ALERT GET IN THE HABIT OF USING THE “TERRAIN” PAGE WHILE APPROACHING A POTENTIAL HAZARD, ADD IT TO YOUR CHECKLIST IF YOU LIKE APPROACHING THE AIRPORT AT NIGHT APPROACHING AN UNFAMILIAR AIRPORT FLIGHT IN LOW VISIBLITY/CEILING CONDITIONS STOP IGNORING THE ALERTS. DON’T JUST HIT “CLEAR”, IDENTIFY THE OBSTRUCTION BEFORE CLEARING THE ALERT. IF YOU CAN’T, EXIT THE AREA.
