  2. ILR – Gov. Scale • Where is your L2 on this scale? • Ask a partner,What would it take to get you to the next level?

  3. Languages…Isn’t it about time? • Group 1: Let’s calculate,How many hours students in Spanish 101 have by the time they finish a semester, a year, and two years? • Group 2: Ok, how about missionaries how many hours per day per week per month per year? • Group 3: Study abroad students for 3 months taking 6 credit hours of Spanish. • --Now, Where would you place your L2 skills on the ACTFL scale? • Where do you think most high school students who finish 2nd year Spanish fall? • Where do you think most students in Spanish 205 fall? • Where do you think most returned missionaries fall? • What does this tell us about taking a language in high school and/or college?

  4. So what’s the solution????? • Do any of these on their own get students to Level 3/superior or above????? • High school Spanish classes as they are currently taught?  • Dual immersion starting in elementary school • Study abroad • University FL classes • Being a missionary for the LDS church

  5. Carrol, 1967 • “Those who do not go abroad do not seem to be able to get very far in their foreign language study, on the average, despite the ministrations of foreign language teachers.” • Residence abroad = not a panacea but it is vital.

  6. One program I like… • What is Chinese Flagship? • three phases: • Campus study focused on a year abroad • Direct enrollment at Nanjing University in China • Internship in a Chinese institution related to your field of study.

  7. But what about the results…. • Students frequently reach the Superior level in Chinese. • Spanish speaking RMs often higher OPI scores in Chinese….. • What????!!!!!!!!! C’estimposible!
