  20. 姓xìng: a person + xìng + a family name only E.g. Wǒ xìng Wáng. (My family name is Wáng.) Nǐ xìng Zhāng. (Your family name is Zhāng.) Tā xìng shénme? (What is his family name?)

  21. Only use a family name with 姓 • When asking a question, shénme (what) stays in the same place as in a non-question. • In Chinese, we use “tā” to refer to a man or a woman. But the characters are different 他 is a man, and 她 is a woman.

  22. A: Qǐng wèn, tā xìng shénme? B: Tā xìng … Mǎ

  23. Liú

  24. Yáo

  25. Hóng

  26. 叫jiào: a person + jiào + a fullname E.g. Wǒ jiào Máo Zédōng. Wǒ xìng Máo , jiào Máo Zédōng.

  27. Do NOT use jiào with just a family name When asking a question, shénme stays in the same place as in a non-question.

  28. Politeness Nín您 is a polite form of 你. You should use it when: Addressing people of higher status, or people who are much older than you. These normally include: your teacher, boss, your parents’ siblings and friends, senior citizens. Meeting people of similar age for the first time, and want to be polite.

  29. How to be most polite: Nín guì xìng? 您贵姓。 When to use it? Very formal social occasions, e.g. business meeting, formal parties, addressing older people, etc. Don’t use it in casual situations.

  30. 呢ne follows a noun or pronoun to form a follow-up question E.g. Wǒ jiào Ōubāmǎ, nǐ ne? Here: nǐ ne? = nǐ jiào shénme míngzi? E.g: Lǎoshī ne? (The meaning here depends on the previous sentence or question.)

  31. Negation word 1: bù 不 • Only used with certain verbs, including 叫 and 姓 in this lesson • Its tone is changed to second when followed by another fourth tone. bù + jiào/xìng  bú jiào/xìng

  41. Some generalizations • j/q/x is always followed by either i or ü, but remember that the two dots are omitted here. Thus j+ü = ju, etc. • zh, ch, sh, r, z, c, s are never followed by the sounds i/ü, but they can be followed by u. • g,k, h are never followed by i/ü either
