  2. The Beginning of a Legacy • Born to John and Mary (Arden) in Stratford-upon-Avon on April 23, 1564 • Baptized at Holy Trinity Church on April 26, 1564 • Third of eight children • Parents became poor in 1570s

  3. “Better a witty fool than a foolish wit.” • Attended a free grammar school in Stratford • It is unknown how long he attended, but his works provide proof of a solid education • Never attended a university • Causes some debate

  4. “It is a wise father that knows his own child.” • Married Anne Hathaway on November 28, 1582 • William was 18 at the time, and Anne was 26—and pregnant. • Susanna born May 26, 1583. • Hamnetand Judith born February 2, 1585 • Baptized at same church as William • Hamnetdied at 11 on August 11, 1596 • “Lost Years” took place for 7 years after twins’ birth • Very controversial • May have fled Stratford after poaching incident • May have worked as an assistant schoolmaster in Lancashire

  5. “I bear a charmed life.” • Shakespeare's work was more prominent than any other during his time • Plays published and sold in "penny-copies“ • Benefit of more literate audience • First author to see his works published during this time • Formed The Globe • Entrepreneur • Was not a man of wealth, but his success granted him to buy a home and retire to Stratford in 1611

  6. “Death is a Fearful Thing.” • Wrote his will in 1611 • Left almost everything to Susanna • Judith received £300 • Anne was left with what Shakespeare referred to as "my second best bed“ • April 23, 1616- Shakespeare’s last day • Shakespeare was put to rest on April 25 • 1623- the First Folio printed • Shakespeare left lasting impression never to be measured with any other author • 400 years later
