  1. Podcasts- Creating a Radio Show Ceri Chipperfield

Why is ICT important in the curriculum? • Firstly, ICT is a requirementof the National Curriculum (1998). • It is also cross-curricular with the use of new media specifically mentioned in PE, Mathematics, PHSE and English. (National Curriculum, 1998) • Times are changing- “Children are at the epicentre of the information revolution, ground zero of the digital world” (Katz, 1996) • Prepares children to become citizensof tomorrows world- “Children are surrounded by multimodal texts so that it becomes imperative to teach multimodality if they are to realise their potential as communicators in the twenty-first century” (Bearne and Wolstencroft, 2007, p.20) • “Those without access to the communications system are likely to fall behind in education and be unable to compete in a highly selective job market” (Montgomery, 1996)

The benefits of new technologies • Motivation to learn – If used effectively, new media can enhance children’s drive to learn, especially if they are provided with access to a rich diversity of ideas and information. It can enable them to reach across community and even national boarders. (Montgomery, 1996) • Learning- ICT can alter children’s capacity to study, specifically with access to new information, which combined with teaching can increase knowledge.(Monteith, 2002) • The future-New technologies will ultimately bring about new employment, especially in the communication industries. This employment tends to have the effect of boosting individual’s literacy levels. (Monteith, 2002)

ICT and Literacy • Teachers views-Grainger (2004) reflects on the fact that many literacy teachers have not been trained to use new media, however there is enough freedom to explore if they have confidence and vision to develop literacy in more exciting ways. (Grainger, 2004) • Children’s views- Literacy must appear very differently to today’s children, they are faced with words and pictures represented in a multitude of ways, their understanding of abstract symbols is therefore heightened. (Monteith, 2002)“ • Benefits-One particular Literacy benefit is that keyboards can reinforce the skills of letter, groups of letters and word recognition. On screen print recognition is also free of clumsy drawn letters. (Monteith, 2002) • Changing times-Literacy in particular changes with the times, we have moved from using clay, stone, wax, slate, paper and now screen. (Monteith, 2002)“

  6. What is a Podcast? • “Anyone can create a Podcast: you don’t need a licence (although music royalties are due) and you definitely don’t need a radio studio.” (Berry, 2006, p.145)
