  1. Welcome parents and friends to the Year 2 SATS Meeting

  2. Outline • What are SATs? • An outline of the tasks and tests. • What you can do to help? Individual children will not be discussed.

  3. What are SATs? • SATs = Standard Assessment Tasks (May 2018) • KS1 SATs papers are taken by pupils in Year 2 as part of the National Curriculum assessment programme. • SATs inform Teacher Assessments

  4. What are SATs? • Children are assessed in;ReadingMaths GPS (Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling- this is often referred to as SPaG) • In KS1 the emphasis is on teacher assessment, the tests support this judgement.

  5. Teacher Assessment • If children do not perform to best ability in the tests, teacher assessment can be used. • The SATs will be administered as subtly as possible.

  6. Tasks and Tests

Reading • Children will complete two papers: • The texts will cover a range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry • Paper 1 consists of a selection of texts, with questions interspersed. • Paper 2 comprises a reading booklet of a selection of passages. Children will write their answers in a • separate booklet.

Reading questions • There will be a variety of question types: • Multiple choice • Ranking/ordering-Number the events below • Matching –’Match the character to the job that they do in the story’ • Labelling-‘Label the text to show the title’ • Find and copy -‘Find and copy one word that shows what the weather was like in the story’ • Short answer - ‘What does the bear eat?’ • Open-ended answer -‘Why did Lucy write the letter to her grandmother? Give two reasons.’

  9. Ants are insects that you can often see in a garden, in a park or just on the pavement. They usually live underground. The Queen ant spends all day laying her eggs. What kind of animal is an ant? ______ Find and copy two places you might see ants? ___________ ___________ What does the queen ant do? Keeps her nest clean lays eggs

  10. SPAGSpelling, punctuation and grammar Children will complete two short papers • Paper 1: Spellings (20 words) • Paper 2: Grammar, punctuation and vocabulary test The SPaG test remains optional for 2018, however as a school we like to do it as it helps to inform us of any gaps in learning.

  11. Mathematics Mathematics SATs consist of; Arithmetictest (approx. 20 minutes) This will focus on the four main calculations. Mathematical fluency, problem-solving and reasoning test (approx. 35 minutes) • variety of question types: • multiple choice, • matching, • true/false,

  12. Homework • Year 2 children are set Maths, Spelling and Reading homework every Friday. • My Maths is accessed online (please request a new password from the class teacher if needed) • Bug Club is accessed online (please request a new password from the class teacher if needed)

  13. How can parents help? • Supporting with homework. • Ensuring children get a good nights sleep and eat a good breakfast. • 100% attendance as far as possible.

  14. How can I help with writing? • Again, reading a variety of texts – the more children read, the more familiar they become with different text types. • Reading homework – text analysis • Spelling – spelling lists / rules every week

How can I help with reading? • Encourage your child to read daily, and let them see you reading. • Encourage them to read fiction and non-fiction. • Try to listen to your child read and ask questions about what they are reading. • Help them with the different skills of reading especially ‘skim’ reading where they are looking for key words in the text. • Speed reading for fluency • Sharing books with siblings • Reading homework

  16. How can I help with Maths? • Support with homework • TIMES TABLES!!! (2,5,10 and 3) • Number Bonds to 20 • Counting forwards and backwards in 1s, 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s (from any given number). • Help your child to check their work through – this will help them to spot mistakes that can sometimes be easily fixed.

  17. What can you do to help? Please don’t take your child on holiday during term time. Please do not buy any commercially produced revision materials but continue to share stories, practise children’s words and complete homework. This will be more beneficial to the children. Make sure they get plenty of sleep during the SATs period. The SATs week can be tiring for 7-year-olds, and they will need a chance to relax and get some fresh air and exercise when the school day is over. Try not to make a big thing of it. Not every child deals with exams well. The tests are used to inform the teacher assessments which take account of your child’s work over the whole year. This helps to give a balanced picture of what they can do.
