Prefixes, Root Words, Suffixes. How can prefixes and suffixes change a root word?. They can change its meaning. A ROOT Word is the original word without a prefix or suffix. Example: Un friend ly Friend is the root word. Prefixes come at the beginning and Suffixes come at the end.

  4. A ROOT Word is the original word without a prefix or suffix.

  5. Example: Unfriendly Friend is the root word.

  6. Prefixes come at the beginning and Suffixes come at the end. Un friend ly

  7. For 3rd Grade, you need to know the following prefixes.

  8. UN- DIS- RE- IN-

  9. What does UN- mean? “NOT”

  10. Look at the following UN- words and tell their meaning.

  11. Unhappy “NOT happy”

  12. Ungrateful “NOT grateful”

  13. Unfriendly “NOT friendly”

  14. What does the prefix DIS- mean? “NOT”

  15. Look at the following DIS- words and determine their meaning.

  16. Disrespectful “NOT respectful”

  17. Disable “NOT able”

  18. What does RE- mean? “DO AGAIN”

  19. Look at the following RE- words and tell their meaning.

  20. Review “view something again”

  21. Rewind “wind something again”

  22. Replay “Play again”

  23. For 3rd Grade, you need to know the following suffixes.

  24. -ous -tion -ly

  25. What does –TION mean? “The act of”

  26. “The act of getting an education” For example,Education

  27. “The act of inspecting something” For example,Inspection

  28. “The act of pronouncing something” For example,Pronuncation

  29. -OUS means “full of”

  30. For example: Spacious means full of space

  31. For example: Gracious means full of grace

  32. -ly makes the word mean the same thing, just changes a word into an adverb.

  33. For example: She was HAPPY. Or She walked HAPPILY into the room.

  34. She is a good friend. She is FRIENDLY to her classmates.

  35. Look at the following words. Identify the prefix, suffix, or root word.
