  1. How to Write a D.B.Q. Strategies and helpful hints.

  2. What kind of question? • Change over time • Cause and effect

  3. Understand the Question What is it asking? Highlight important terms.

  4. Example • To what extent had the colonists developed a sense of their identity and unity as Americans by the eve of the Revolution. Use the documents and your knowledge of the period 1750 to 1776 to answer the question.

  5. Generate categories (paragraphs) Use the question for direction Paragraph -Identity Paragraph - Unity

  6. Brainstorm appropriate outside information. • Do this before reading the documents • Make a list of any and all possible information that could be used. • Focus on perimetersof question – time period and topic

  7. Analyze the documents For each document: Highlight author Write down anything you might know about him/her Highlight date Write down anything significant about it

  8. Read the text What is the main idea? What is the point the author is trying to make? • Write down the significance. Ask yourself how this document can help you answer the question.

  9. Creating a claim • What am I going to prove? • In general, what will the paper discuss?

  10. Organization • Which documents and outside info belongs in which category? • (Identity and unity?)

  11. Write the essay Use construction model!
