Heat Transfer

Heat Transfer. Heat is transferred in three basic ways: CCR. Conduction : heat transfer within materials and between objects in contact. Vibrating loose atoms transferring energy to neighbors Conductors – conduct heat well (e.g. metals: silver, copper, iron)

  1. Heat Transfer Heat is transferred in three basic ways: CCR

  2. Conduction: heat transfer within materials and between objects in contact • Vibrating loose atoms transferring energy to neighbors • Conductors– conduct heat well (e.g. metals: silver, copper, iron) • Insulators – poor conductor, delay transfer of heat (e.g. wood, wool, air) • (Kinesthetic simulation – pass the ball)

  3. Convection: heat transferred by flowing currents in a fluid (liquid or gas) • Hot air rises (becomes less dense) and cools as it rises • Ex. Hot water heating in a home, air currents by lake

  4. Examples Weather Insulation Cooking

  5. Radiation: heat transfer by electromagnetic waves, heat rays • Needs no material medium (goes through a vacuum) • e.g Sun, fire, lamp filament
