  1. Be not afraid! Eleven facts prove that the AGW does not and can not exist! camille.veyres@polytechnique.org CO2 in the air : 6% is from fossil fuels & 94% is from natural outgassing by oceans and soils; for the 94% d[CO2](t)/dt = a T(t) +b, the carbon dioxide in the air is CO2(t)= ∫t0t (a T(t’) +b ) dt’ + CO2(t0); it is a consequence of the past temperatures T(t’) and cannot be a cause of those T(t)! (2) A greenhouse effect exists ONLY in VACUUM. It CANNOT exist on Earth: 2-1) water vapor makes the atmosphere very opaque to thermal infrared radiation: no power can be carried by radiation across an opaque body 2-2) water vapor is a heat pipe (evaporation + convection) that cools the surface & delivers energy to the “skin” of the water vapor that in the high troposphere emits thermal infrared 2-3) The polytropic T~Pa relation describes the tropospheric temperatures on Earth and on Venus. Surface temperature is a consequence of the pressure 2-4) The AMOUNT of water vapor near 300 mbar controls the OLR

  2. First display of bogus « climate science » designed to incriminate fossil fuels November 1965 http://climateandcapitalism.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2014/06/Presidents-Advisory-Report-on-warming-1965.pdf • Claims : • 50% of fossil fuel CO2 remains forever in the air • CO2… like the glass in a greenhouse raises the temperature of the lower air

  3. Giga ton carbon = Gt-C = billion tons 1 ppm in the air = 2,12 Gt-C (90 +80 ) = 850 / 5 1/5 of the CO2 of the air is renewed every year Vegetation 500 Gt-C Soils 2000 Gt-C 90 Gt-C/year Fossil fuels 10 Gt-C/year (cumulative since 1751 : 430) Atmosphere860 Gt-C 406 ppm 80 Gt-C/year Ocean 39 000 Gt-C

  4. Cumulative anthropogenic emissions (fuels and cement) since 1751 = 430 Gt-C = one per cent of the carbon circulating in oceans, soils, vegetation, air IPCC (figure 6-1, page 471) (80 + 90) = 850 / 5 Vegetation (24 hours respiration discounted) absorbs (3/4)123 = 90 Gt-C/year Oceans absorb 80 Gt-C/year ocean 39 000 Gt-C soils 2 000 Gt-C vegetation 550 Gt-C air 860 Gt-C (2017) J. 5. Reality: 123 = 92 + 31 and without the daily respiration 69 + 23 Because +31% over the 20th century and +33% since preindustrial IPCC (figure 6-1, page 471) +20 Gt-C/year +33% since pre-industrial In the « preindustrial times » (1/5)thof the CO2 in the air (then about 300 ppm) was absorbed (and renewed) every year indeed 60 + 69 = 129 Gt-C/year = 300ppm x 2,12 Gt-C/ppm / 5 years Reality: 3 times more

  6. Excluding the deep oceans (and the soils) from the carbon cycle : Revelle (1965), Bolin (1960), IPCC Vegetation 500 Gt-C With deep oceans and soils excluded, Revelle and IPCC say: 50% of the fossil fuel emissions remain in the air … forever Fossil fuels • 1,6 Gt-C/year (1950) 9,6 Gt-C/year (2018) (cumulative since 1751 : 430) Atmosphere667 Gt-C (1958) 860 Gt-C (2018) Thin layer Surface Ocean isolated

  7. In the ocean: Dissolved Inorganic Carbon DIC = CO2 (1%), HCO3- (90%), CO3- - (9%) with Ca CO3 Sea water pCO2 increases 3,8 times when temperature goes from -1,5°C to 30°C Fact 1 • 400 µatm = • 1972 µmole/kg @30°C • & • µmole/kg @0°C pCO2 sea water(µatm) = 250 (DIC /2000)10.5(T / 288.15)12.2 very, very non linear ! Outgassing: sea water  air ≈ α (pCO2 sea water - pCO2 air) Example : pCO2 sea water = 500; pCO2 air = 400 +1°C  +4% on pCO2 sea water Outgassing grows by 20% from α (500 – 400) = 100 α to α (500 x1,04 – 400) = 120 α

  8. Fact 1: Carbon in Ocean DIC µmole/kg Surface - air 2000 Surface – deep ocean There is no and can be no static equilibrium between atmosphere and ocean ! 400 µatm = 1972 µmole/kg @30°C Reality : intertropical 2250 µmole/kg are obducted 400 µatm = 2224 µmole/kg @0°C Reality : high latitude surface 2000 µmole/kg and less 2280 2180 A section of normalized DIC µmole/kg in the Atlantic Ocean figure 20 of Millero, Chemical Reviews, 2007, Vol. 107, No. 2 pCO2 sea water(µatm) = 250 (DIC /2000)10.5(T / 288.15)12.2

  9. pCO2 sea water(µatm) = 250 (DIC /2000)10.5(T / 288.15)12.2 Bolin (1960), Revelle (1965) and IPCC : Revelle’s relation or buffer factor: dpCO2 / pCO2 = 10.5 dDIC / DIC pCO2 sea water(µatm) = A (DIC /2000)10.5 The temperature effect T12,2 has been suppressed !

  10. Marina Levy et al. (2013) … climatological physical fluxes of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) are two orders of magnitude larger than the other carbon fluxes … At temperate latitudes, the subduction of DIC and to a much lesser extent (<10%) the sinking of particles maintain CO2 undersaturation, whereas DIC is obducted back to the surface in the tropical band (75%) and Southern Ocean (25%). … At the global scale, these two large counter-balancing fluxes of DIC amount to +275.5 Gt-C /yrfor the supply by obduction and –264.5 Gt-C/ yrfor the removal by subduction which is 3 to 5 times larger than previous estimates”M. Levy, L. Bopp, P. Karleskind, L. Resplandy, C. Ethe, and F. Pinsard (2013), Physical pathways for carbon transfers between the surface mixed layer and the ocean interior, Global Biogeochem. Cycles, 27, 1001–1012, doi:10.1002/gbc.20092 Fact 2 Surface ocean 276 265 deepsea

  11. Roger Revelle (1965) and IPCC suppress the constant renewal of the carbon of the surface ocean from and to deep ocean IPCC AR5 2013 figure 6-1 page 471 IPCC FAR-AR1 1990 Reality: Surface ocean 276 265 deepsea

  12. ∫t0t1df(t)/dtdt = f(t1) - f(t0) d[CO2](t)/dt Mauna Loa, natural, for dt=12 months (gray) = 1,7 (AT(t) – (-0,8°C) ) AT(t) is the UAH MSU intertropical lower troposphere temperature anomaly series Fact 3 Statistical Unit root tests for time series say that it is the derivative dCO2 /dt that can be correlated with the intertropical temperature d [CO2](t) /dt = a AT(t) + b , [CO2](t) - [CO2](t0) = ∫t0 t (a AT(t) + b) dt Mauna Loa ppm MUST be derived once w.r.t. time to get a weakly stationary process SARIMAProcess[0.003, {-0.36, -0.19, -0.16, -0.086, 0.005}, 1, {} , {12, {}, 1, {-0.8}},0.10] + Dickey Fuller tests AT(t) from UAH MSU intertropical lower troposphere series is a weakly stationary ARProcess[0.0028 , {0.89}, 0.022] The carbon dioxide content of the air is the integral over time of past temperatures. It cannot cause temperatures !

  13. Fact 4 Gt = billion tons = Giga ton 1 ppmv CO2 in the atmosphere is 2,1 Gt-Carbon The more CO2 in the air, the more the plants eat, the more the oceans absorb! Every year 1/5 th of the CO2 of the atmosphere is absorbed! Atmosphere 860 Gt-C 90 Gt-C/yr(*) Vegetation & soils 2500 Gt-C (*) respiration over 24 hours discounted as not seen from Mauna Loa Anthropogenic CO2 10 Gt-C/yr knownexactly 400 µatm 400 µatm 1/5 = (90 + 80) / 850 80 Gt-C/yr Transit time: 1 or 2 years ? A fifth of the atmospheric CO2 is absorbed every year change of CO2 in the air = input - output dy(t)/dt = f(t) - y(t)/5 y(t) = 5 f(t) – 5 dy/dt Ocean 39 000 Gt-C Ions bicarbonate, carbonate & CO2 200 µatm 600 µatm 270 Gt-C/an 270 Gt-C/an Transit time: 140 years ? Anthropogenic yanth.(t) = 5 yr x 10 Gt-C/yr – 5 yr x 0,4 Gt-C/yr = 48 Gt-C = 23 ppm or 6% hence Natural CO2 from natural outgassing = 812 Gt-C = 383 ppm

  14. Fact 4 Natural climate cycles  Temperatures  Natural outgassing  CO2 in the air  Absorption = 1/5th per year 80 ppm/yr absorbednatural57 ppm/yr 74 ppm/yrduring the XXth century 63 ppm/yr Outgassednatural anthropogenic emissions 4,5 ppm/yr 1 ppm/yr

  15. Fact 5 ẟ13C = 1000 ( (13C/12C) /0,0112372 – 1 ) proves that: there is no more than 6% of fossil fuel carbon in the air (-30 pm) (6%) + (-7.2 pm)(94% ) = (-8.6 pm) observed Observed ẟ13C @Mauna Loa & ẟ13C of natural outgassing ẟ13C of fossil fuels Deceptions :IPCC FAR (1990) page 14 of Chapter 1 § 1.2.5: "Evidence that contemporary carbon dioxide increase is anthropogenic....The observed isotopic trends of 13C and 14C agree qualitatively with those expected due to CO2 emissions from fossil fuels and the biosphere and they are quantitatively consistent with the results from carbon cycle modeling. IPCC AR4 p 139: “Data presented in Figure 2.3 for the 13C/12C ratio of atmospheric CO2 at Mauna Loa show a decreasing ratio, consistent with trends in both fossil fuel CO2 emissions and atmospheric CO2 mixing ratios (Andres et al., 2000; Keeling et al., 2005).”

  16. Impulse responseor transfer functions manufactured in the 1980s A PRIORI assumption: all the change of ppm isfromfossil fuels ! Input = fossil fuels & cements ; output = Mauna Loa ppm ppmCO2 [t] – ppmCO2[t0] = ∫t0tF(t-t’) fossil_fuels(t’) dt’ F(t)with8 coefficients tuned at will! Bern & Hamburg & Berne rev. transfer functions and “airborne fraction” Gone are the 160 Gt-C /year naturally outgassed ! Remaining in the air A half remains forever in the air F(t) = 0,5 δ(t) (Revelle 1965, IPCC) Those Bern & Hamburg functions failed miserably: coal production doubled (2000-2012) while the 12-months change of ppm did not increase! 1/e =37% F(30 years) = ½  pseudo half-life F(t) = exp(-t/5) dy(t) / dt + y(t)/5 = f(t) Half-life = 3,5 years Years after the impulse of CO2 into the atmosphere pseudo life-time F(100) = 1/e =1 / 2,718 = 0,37

  17. +40% mean +1,7 ppm/year stable increase of the ppm over 12 months Bern & Hamburg functions debunked by reality

  18. Looking for an excuse : the magic abilities of the Chinese coal & other obfuscations James Hansen, PushkerKharecha and Makiko Sato Climate forcing growth rates: doubling down on our Faustian bargain2012 Environ. Res. Lett. 7 044035 “An interesting point, however, is the failure of the observed increases in atmospheric CO2 to increase as rapidly as the fossil fuel source has increased … “ “We suggest that the surge of fossil fuel use, mainly coal, since 2000 is a basic cause of the large increase of carbon uptake by the combined terrestrial and ocean carbon sinks. One mechanism by which fossil fuel emissions increase carbon uptake is by fertilizing the biosphere via provision of nutrients essential for tissue building … Modeling and field studies confirm a major role of nitrogen deposition, working in concert with CO2 fertilization, in causing a large increase in net primary productivity of temperate and boreal forests … what is needed to explain the post-2000 anomaly in airborne CO2” “… because the CO2 from fossil fuel burning remains in the surface climate system for millennia, the "devil's payment" will be extracted from humanity via increased global warming” Chinese coal Reality : exp(-t / 5 years) decrease both for natural outgassing and for fossil fuel CO2! airborne fraction “Pinatubo effect” The moving average over 7 years is a real fraud!

Bothocean and fossil fuels have, during the XXthcentury, delivered carbon to the “vegetation & soils” compartment, more than to air, because of the nonlinear effect of vegetation growth with more CO2 : dyveg & soils /dt = (yatm(t) /10) (yveg & soils(t)/yveg & soils(t0))u- yveg & soils(t-30)/ 30 E. 20. Ocean carbon turnover time from subduction to upwelling is possibly a century (50 m water) / ( 5 mm/year = precipitation over the central Antarctic) = 10 000 years The moving-average time smoothing over millennia made by the slow closing of pores between ice crystals in the firn, between surface and a given layer, removes all trace of the oceanic century-long carbon cycles between middle latitude absorption & subduction and intertropical obduction & outgassing Fact 7 Snow Firn final closing of pores Ice “ice cores show that the ppm were always below 300 ppm” Comment: the information that could show significant changes of CO2 w.r.t. time (e.g. 300 ppm to 400 ppm) has been erased in ice cores! 21. Fact 8 • In the troposphere on Earth and on Venus : dT/dz = lapse rate = - g/(Cp - Ch), • g standard acceleration due to gravity = 9,81 m/s² on Earth • T ~ Pawith a polytropicexponent a= R/(Cp-Ch), • on Earth: R = 8,314/(molar mass), Cp= 1005 J/K/kg, Ch = -509 J/K/kg (V. A. Bielinski 1948, O. G. Sorokhtin 2005, 2007) Proof: dH = T dS + V dp ; T dS = d'Q = Ch dT = Cp dT –R T dp/p dp = - ρ g dz or dp/p = - g/(R Tv) dz T(p) / T0 = (p / p0)R/(Cp - Ch)where (p0, T0) is some point in the troposphere or the surface Venus: 230 K + 63 km x 8 K/km = 735 K = 230 K (92 atm /0,1 atm)0,17; almost no insolation on the surface (30 W/m² on the lit face under the Sun) ; 160 W/m² radiated to the cosmos hence the 230 K Earth: 223 K + 10 km x 6,5 K/km = 288 K = 223 K (1 atm /0,26 atm)0,19 Referred to the dynamic layer of water vapor radiating thermal infrared to cosmos just below the tropopause

  22. Thermal Infrared ? Any body that absorbs radiation of a certain frequency radiates at that frequency but at its own temperature Figures from Infrared thermal imaging in medicine E F J Ring and K Ammer 2012 Physiol. 26. Revelle 1965 The “pizza” ordered in 1965 was indeed delivered two years later

  27. Raymond PierrehumbertPhysicsToday, January 2011 Though the first calculation of the warming of the Earth due to CO2 increase was carried out by Arrhenius in 1896, accurate CO2 and water vapor spectroscopy and a fully correct formulation of planetary energy balance did not come together until the work of Syukiro Manabe and Richard Whetherald in 1967 … With that development the theory was brought to its modern state of understanding. It has withstood all subsequent challenges and without question represents one of the great triumph of 20th century physics (1) With modern correct absorption spectra (unknown in 1900) , the formulas of Arrhenius say +0,2°C for a doubling of the CO2 content of the air! (2) The radiative-convective equilibrium is a trick (not a theory) to apply on Earth a “radiative equilibrium theory of the photospheres of stars” (10000 K to 3000 K) The trick is : “use the lapse rate -6,5 K/km whenever the “radiative equilibrium” says more” “Radiative equilibrium theory” assumes an optical thickness of the air of 1,2 instead of hundreds : Radiation flow fup: @ surface fup(tmax) = b0 (1 + tmax/2); @ top of the air fup(t = 0) = b0 ; hence on Earth tmax = 2 ( fup(tmax) / fup(t=0) - 1) = 2 (384 W/m² / 240 W/m² - 1 ) = 1,2 tmax increases with more CO2 and fup(tmax) and the surface temperature “must” increase! All this may apply to the outer layers of stars but is complete nonsense on Earth with water vapor

  28. The “radiative equilibrium” of stellar photospheres (5000 K!) can not apply to Earth and produces nonsense temperature profiles (solid black line below); it assumes an optical thickness of about 1,2 The radiative-convective equilibrium is a simple trick (not a theory) to get to the dashed line: “use a lapse rate 6,5 K/km whenever the “radiative equilibrium” says more …” “The great triumph of the 20th century physics”: Manabe and Whetherald 1967 An obfuscation ! complete nonsense for the Earth

  29. The optical thickness τof the atmosphere is theparameter to use to compute the diffuse radiation in an absorbing and radiating medium like the atmosphere (Chandrasekhar 1948, K. Ya. Kondratiev 1969) Fact 10 Water vapor makes the air very, very opaque to thermal infrared τ =10 80% of the thermal radiation from a body is produced in its skin or “pellicle” of optical thickness τ = 1,07 fdown(ν, z) = π ∫0τ(ν,z) B(ν, T(t')) 2 E2(τ(ν, z) - t') dt' fup(ν, z) = π ∫τ(ν,z)τmax B(ν, T(t')) 2 E2(t' - τ(ν, z)) dt' fsurface(ν, z) = πB(ν, Tsurface ) 2 E3(tmax – τ(ν, z)) B Planck’sfunction, E2 and E3exponentialintegralfunctions

  30. Where the optical thickness is τ = 100, the thermal infrared radiation is mostly (80%) produced by a skin of • (1,07 / 100) 25 kg/m² = 300 grams/m² of water vapor • That is: • 30 meters above the surface (assuming 10 kg H2O / ton of air over the first kilometer) • 2 km to 3 km under the tropopause as there is • 300 g H2O/ ton of air

  31. CO2 O3 stratosphere troposphere window mK/day /cm-1 http://airs.jpl.nasa.gov/Science/ResearcherResources/MeetingArchives/TeamMeeting20060307/2006_03_07/Gettelman_airs_climate.pdf

  32. Level of τ=1,07 computedwithτ(P)H2O=P4,5 τ(1)H2Omax τ(P)CO2=P1,45τ(1)CO2max Fact 10 Stratosphere Water vapor content of the air near 300 mbar is dynamic and controls OLR Troposphere Higher and colder with more CO2 over 1.2 THz in the troposphere: OK IPCC insists that ONLY a warmer 300 mbar layer will restore the OLR This is a sleight of hand , a deception ! Slightly less water vapor between 200 mbar and 400 mbar restores OLR because water vapor will radiate over 40 THz from a lower and warmer layer The worst deception ever seen!

  33. RH = Relative Humidity = water vapor partial pressure / saturation partial pressure at T Psaturation = Clausius-Clapeyron: +1°C  +7% near the surface and 290 K but +12% near 200 K Reality : near 300 millibar, water vapor is very far from saturation and its quantity per ton of air changes quickly; doubling CO2 over two centuries at +2 ppm/year could drive a slow decrease of the OLR , but the water vapor quantity decreases to maintain OLR at the equilibrium value : water vapor radiates from a lower and warmer layer and radiates more over 40 THz Myth n°1 : water vapor quantity is constant near 300 mbar; doubling CO2 means -2 W/m² on OLR, to be compensated by +1°C as 2 W/m² = 4 x 1°C /230 K x 115 W/m² ; but +1°C is not scary enough ! Myth n°2 : +1°C and constant RH +10% for the water vapor quantity near 300 millibar hence water vapor radiates also from higher and colder hence a still greater warming is needed! Charney Commission voted in 1979 a range of +1,5°C to +4,5°C for this –physically inept- “positive feedback” driven warming Myth n°3 +1°C and increasing RH+30% or more for the quantity of water vapor near 300 millibar; which radiates from higher and colder … a very strong temperature increase is needed to restore OLR …a strong positive feedback … no limit to the warming a RunawayGreenhouseeffect

  34. The water vapor content of the air of the upper troposphere controls the OLR and the surface temperatures. • This upper troposphere water content is a consequence of the vertical and horizontal motions of the air. • It might be -someday- computed from a "Maximum Entropy Production Principle" Richard Lindzen, Stefan Buehler, Garth Paltridge. Fact 11 OLR is controlled here • http://eodg.atm.ox.ac.uk/RFM/atm/saw.atm and likes

  35. The water vapor content of the air of the upper troposphere controls the OLR and the surface temperatures. Fact 11 OLR is controlled here at 300 mbar 300 grams/ton of air 10 kg /ton of air January 1948 Specific humidity: kg/ton of air (kg/100 mbar) Relative humidity: percent of saturated content @T(P)

  36. Radiative Forcing from a “doubling” of the CO2 • Hypothesized , computed, but neither observed nor observable nor measurable decrease of the global outgoing radiation to the cosmos, to be said under the tropopause The layers below the tropopause should warm with a “heat” going down to the surface and into the deep oceans RF= Radiative Forcing

  37. Frauds and deceptions More CO2 means less Outgoing Longwave Radiation (OLR) [yes, for the tropospheric CO2 !] This reduction of the OLR is a "radiative forcing" per GIEC AR5 WG1 2013 figure 8.1 IPCC claims:(1) There exist a radiative forcing from more CO2 : 2,3 W/m² in 2011; (2) 93% of this radiative forcing ends in the oceans (IPCC); (3) Oceans will be boiling (James Hansen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACHLayfA6_4) Radiative Forcing from greenhouse gases does not exist! It is a myth! And a miracle: energy produced from nothing! No chemical or nuclear reaction! OLR: +1,1 W/m² / decade Hans Christian Andersen 1837 OceanHeat Content Ocean Heat Content since 1960 0,25 W/m² The new clothes of the emperor

  38. Please, focus on the two major obfuscations and frauds used since Roger Revelle’s 1965 report: “Anthropogenic CO2 accumulates in the atmosphere”, “Greenhouse effect traps heat, etc.” 1) 6% of the CO2 of the air is, in 2018, from fossil fuels due to the 5 years lifetime of CO2 in the air; the 94% from natural outgassing is the time integral of past temperatures! The carbon of the surface oceans is renewed continuously by upwelling from the deep ocean, and by subduction into the deep ocean. The Bern impulse response and the airborne fraction have been debunked by the Chinese coal surge and by the observed delta13C 2) T /T0 =(P/P0)R/(Cp - Ch) determines the surface temperature on Earth and on Venus (almost no light from the Sun on the surface of Venus) 3) The air is on Earth very OPAQUE (optical thickness in the 10s and 100s) to the thermal infrared; the surface loses the solar heat by evaporation and by convection (the water vapor heat pipe) (tales: radiative equilibrium & radiative-convective equilibrium) 4) The quantity of water vapor per ton of air near 300 mbar (say 300 grams per ton of air) dynamically controls the Outgoing Longwave Radiation of the Earth, not the CO2 (tales: forcings, constant humidity, positive feedbacks with constant RH or increasing RH)

  39. The eleven facts prove: The CO2 from fossil fuels has almost no effect on the CO2 content of the air The CO2 in the air is, within a few percent, a consequence of the temperatures The global thermal equilibrium of the air is controlled and regulated by the quantity of water vapor near the top-of-the-troposphere; CO2 has no effect on weather and on climate CO2 is the food of all the creatures living on Earth and more CO2 is more food for all The demonization of the fossil fuels is built upon frauds made with a purpose
