  1. WAFC Science Meeting 20-21 April 2009 Washington DC. Web-Based Graphical Output of WAFS Gridded Icing, Turbulence, Cumulonimbus Cloud . Larry Burch, WAFC Washington Nigel Gait, WAFC London

  2. WAFC Science Meeting 20-21 April 2009 Washington DC. WAFS Gridded ICE, TURB, CB • Three Output Components • GRIB2 • The full product suite • Web-based graphics • Limited set of products • “High-at-a-Glance” • Minimum set of products

  3. WAFC Science Meeting 20-21 April 2009 Washington DC. GRIB2 Data Set • Everything currently in GRIB1, • i.e., Wind, Temp, Humidity, Trop Height , Max Wind, • Plus • Icing, Turbulence, Cumulonimbus Cloud.

  4. WAFC Science Meeting 20-21 April 2009 Washington DC. GRIB2 Full Product Suite • 3 hourly time steps forecasts: • 6,9,12,15,18,21,24,27,30,33 and 36 hours. • 3 additional level for wind/temp: • FL 270, 320 and 360. • 1.25 degree resolution. (regular grid = unthinned) • Issued 4 times per day, based on 00Z, 06Z, 12Z, 18Z model runs. • Note: Current WAFS GRIB1 product suite to remainunchanged.

  5. WAFC Science Meeting 20-21 April 2009 Washington DC. GRIB2 Full Product Suite • Icing (mean and max). 100 hPa thick layers centered at: • 800hPa(FL060), 700hPa (FL100), 600hPa (FL140), 500hPa (FL180), 400hPa (FL240) and 300hPa (FL300). • CAT (mean and max). 50 mb thick layers centered at: • 400hPa(FL240), 350hPa(FL270), 300hPa(FL300), 250hPa(FL340), 200hPa(FL390) and 150hPa(FL450) • In-Cloud Turbulence (mean and max). 100 mb thick layers centered at: • 700hPa (FL100), 600hPa (FL140), 500hPa (FL180), 400hPa (FL240) and 300hPa (FL300). • CB Cloud: • Horizontal extent, Bases, Tops.

  6. WAFC Science Meeting 20-21 April 2009 Washington DC. Web-Based Graphical Output of gridded ICE, TURB, CB. • Primarily intended for WAFS users in Least Developed Countries. • Web-based output is a partial set of the full GRIB2 suite. • 630 products, 4 times a day.

  7. WAFC Science Meeting 20-21 April 2009 Washington DC. 630 Products (pending approval by WAFSOPSG/5) • Valid times: 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24 hrs. • (Full GRIB2 suite contains 27, 30, 33, and 36 hrs). • Mean icing: • 700 hPa and 600 hPa (FL100 and 140). • Mean CAT: • 300 hPa, 250 hPa, 200 hPa (FL300, 340, 390) • CB Horizontal Extent, Contoured Tops. • Standard ICAO chart areas.

  10. WAFC Science Meeting 20-21 April 2009 Washington DC. High-at-a-Glance SIGWX(Concept - Beta version) (Final version pending approval by WAFSOPSG/5) • Outcome from WAFSOPSG/4 • Conclusion 4/14b) design the gridded forecasts with a high “at a glance” value; • Note. The gridded forecasts do not have to replicate the existing SIGWX forecasts; however, they must provide the same ease of use. • WAFCs propose combining a limited set of gridded IC/TURB/CB elements with Jet Stream. • Suitable for Flight Documentation ?

  11. WAFC Science Meeting 20-21 April 2009 Washington DC. High-at-a-Glance • WAFCs propose the “high-at-a-glance” contain two parts. • High-at-a-glance for SIGWX at High Levels (HG-SWH) • High-at-a-glance for SIGWX at Medium Levels • Drift-down emergency • Loss of cabin pressure • Single-engine operations

  12. WAFC Science Meeting 20-21 April 2009 Washington DC. High-at-a-Glance HIGH Level En-route Cruise • CB Cloud extent, • CAT: FL300-390, • Jet Stream: FL340 >80 kts DRAFT

  13. WAFC Science Meeting 20-21 April 2009 Washington DC. High-at-a-Glance MEDIUM LevelDrift-down Emergency • Icing potential • FL 100 – 140 • Layer 080-160 • CB Cloud extent DRAFT
