  2. Why are salary surveys used and why should I participate? This is a question that is frequently asked. But before you decide that a wage & salary survey isn’t going to benefit you, consider how one can help you to: • Price jobs and determine market positions • Document budget & structure trends • Identity and defend current practices • Attract & retain top talent • Engage employees • Reward fairly

  3. Understanding the Survey Before you participate in a wage & salary survey, it is important to understand the factors that are involved in collecting and calculating the data. EAF’s Wage & Salary Survey covers...... • Location Alabama (specific breakouts for the Greater Birmingham and Huntsville areas will be available depending on participation) • Industry Manufacturing & non-manufacturing • Function Job descriptions that describe the function of each position

Time Saving Hints (keep this information in mind while completing the survey!) • When matching the jobs (which is the most time consuming aspect of the survey), please note which EAF job (by code #) you matched to your job. • Keep a copy of the completed questionnaire, then each year you will only have to rematch jobs in your organization to our survey if there are new jobs in your organization, if the job descriptions/job duties in your organization have changed, or if EAF adds or revises jobs. • Add the EAF job code # to which you matched your job into your HRIS system so that each year you simply need to run a report in Excel and submit it to EAF!

  5. Instructions • Report individual rates of pay only. Do NOT report averages or ranges. • Report base pay only, unless otherwise indicated. • Report wages in either HOURLY or ANNUAL figures. • Submit data only for individuals who work full time. EXCEPTION: Retail, Hospitality & Food Service Industries

  6. Please Read Job Descriptions Fully Before Filling In The Data Requested! • Be certain the jobs you are reporting closely correspond with these descriptions. Do not match by job title or by job grade. Consult, if needed, internally with your appropriate supervisors/managers for the technical assistance needed to appropriately match the descriptions.

  7. *Please Note* • Jobs have been assigned numbers and they will rarely change. • Only key jobs are being surveyed. Some of your positions will not fit the descriptions given. Enter only rates of pay for your jobs that reasonably fit these descriptions. If an employee performs duties that appear in more than one job description, enter the person’s rate only once opposite the job description that represents the highest skill or level of performance for which you pay to retain the employee on this job. • A questionnaire is to be completed and returned for each work location reported. Where multi-location information is furnished from a central source, each individual location’s data is to be reported on a separate questionnaire template.

Completing the Questionnaire • Go to http://www.eafinc.org/eaf/wagesurvey/alabama/wage_survey.htmlto download the excel template and save it to your hard drive. • Report data as of April 1 of the current year. • Submit full-time employee data only. Exception: Retail, Hospitality & Food Service Industries • Only key jobs are being surveyed so read the job descriptions fully. You can print the Job Descriptions from http://www.eafinc.org/eaf/wagesurvey/alabama/wage_survey.html • Report individual rates of pay only. Note:Since some of your jobs will not fit the descriptions provided, enter only rates of pay for jobs that reasonably fit these descriptions. If an employee performs duties that appear in more than one description, submit that employee’s rate to the position that represents the best match. There are two worksheets in the Excel template. The first worksheet has 3 sections for data input; these sections cover your company information and general practices. The second worksheet is for your overall wage data. To see how to complete these worksheets, continue thru the next couple of slides.

  9. Section 1of the first worksheetis for your general Company Information. Simply type in the requested data!

  10. Section 2of the first worksheetis for your Specific Compensation Data.

  11. Section 3of the first worksheet is for your Practices & Wage Adjustment information.

  12. The second worksheet of the template is for your overall General Compensation Data. This worksheet is so easy to complete – simply list the actual pay rate for each position matched and the number of employees at that pay rate. Once you have completed this section in Excel, you can save your data and cut and paste the information for next year’s survey. Since job codes usually remain the same, this means you only have to update the Rate of Pay information for each individual in the position. The following is an example of how to complete this section of the questionnaire: 1001 Accountant I $30,000.00 1 1 1001 Accountant I $25,000.00 1001 Accountant I $25,500.00 1

The more members we have participating, the more valuable the survey will be to everyone.
