VirginiaStandards of Learning • 8.1: The student will analyze and evaluate the relationship between health- risk behaviors and the onset of health problems that can impact health and wellness during the adolescent years. Key concepts include • C: the short and long term health issues related to alcohol abuse and tobacco use;

  3. Journal #1 • Alcohol is a depressant that can cause changes in your mood. What other negative effects does alcohol have on your health?

  4. Vocabulary • Alcohol- A drug that is produced by a chemical reaction in fruits, vegetables, and grains. This is a fast-acting drug. • Depressants- Drugs that slow down the body’s function and reactions.

  5. Vocabulary • Intoxication- A person’s mental and physical abilities have been impaired by alcohol. • Blood Alcohol Content (BAC)- A measure of the amount of alcohol present in a person’s blood.

Facts on Blood Alcohol Concentration(BAC) • At .020 light to moderate drinkers begin to feel some effects. • At .040 most people begin to feel relaxed. • At .060 judgment is somewhat impaired, people are less able to make rational decisions about their capabilities (for example, driving). • At .080 there is a definite impairment of muscle coordination and driving skills; this is legal level for intoxication in most states. • At .10 there is a clear deterioration of reaction time and control; this is legally drunk in all states.

  7. Facts on Blood Alcohol Concentration • At .120, vomiting usually occurs. Unless this level is reached slowly or a person has developed a tolerance to alcohol. • At .150, balance and movement are impaired. This blood-alcohol level means the equivalent of 1/2 pint of whiskey is circulating in the blood stream. • At .300 many people lose consciousness. • At .400 most people lose consciousness; some die. • At .450, breathing stops; this is a fatal dose for most people

  8. Facts on Blood Alcohol Concentration • Examples of Blood Alcohol Levels in males (160 pds) and females (140 pds). After 3 hours of drinking (1 drink = 12 oz. of beer): • Female: 4 drinks = BAC .08 Male: 5 drinks = BAC .076 • Alcohol abuse and intoxication are the single major contributors to auto deaths, domestic violence, sexual assault, date rape, suicide, accidents, drowning, most violent crime, and countless health problems

  9. Virginia State Law • "Intoxicated" means a condition in which a person has drunk enough alcoholic beverages to observably affect his manner, disposition, speech, muscular movement, general appearance or behavior. • A 0.080 percent Blood Alcohol Concentration is considered legally drunk.

  10. Vocabulary • Alcohol Poisoning- A dangerous condition that results when a person drinks excessive amounts of alcohol over a short time period.* This could result in death. • Cirrhosis- Disease characterized by scarring and eventual destruction of the liver.

  11. Reaction Time- the ability of the body to respond quickly and appropriately to situations. Liver-organ that breaks down alcohol once it has entered the bloodstream.

  13. Refusal Skills • Say no in a firm voice • Tell why not. • Offer other ideas. • Promptly
