  3. population • Define: the number of people in an place. • Example: There is a large population of flamingos living in the pond. • Ask: Can you name another animal population that might live in a pond?

  4. recognized • Define: to know and remember something or someone from before. • Example: Nola recognized herself in the mirror. • Ask: What is another word for recognized?

  5. relatives • Define: animals or people who belong to the same family. • Example: We invited friends and relatives to our picnic. • Ask: How do you spend time with your relatives?

  6. resources • Define: things that are used for help or support. • Example: Plants need resources, such as sunlight and fresh air to grow. • Ask: What resources do people need?

  7. success • Define: a result that was hoped for/ someone who is famous because of his or her achievement. • Example: Jill’s performance was a success. • Ask: Can you tell about a success you have had?

  8. survive • Define: to stay alive. • Example: Animals need water to survive. • Ask: What are some other things animals need to survive?

  9. threatened • Define: caused danger. • Example: The wildfire threatened the trees. • Ask: Can you describe a time when a storm threatened your plans?
