  3. Ethics for Public Speaking • Are your goals or what you set out to accomplish ethical? • Are you Prepared? • Are you honest in what you say? • Is your language appropriate? • Finally, is it your work?

  4. Ethics for Listening • Are you courteous and attentive? • Are you open-minded?

  5. Analyzing your Audience • Who are they, what do they know, and what do they need? • Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

  6. Types of Audiences • Pedestrian- Random and Temporary • Organized- Looking for “how to” • Passive- There to accomplish separate goal • Absent- Not Physically There • Selected- There intentionally and voluntarily • Concerted- Seeking motivation and action

  7. Visual Aids • What is available in this room that you will feel comfortable and confident using?

  8. Do’s of Visual Aids • Make big enough for all to see • Be on correct side • Only show when using and talking about • Pass out handouts at end only • Still maintain eye contact with audience • Remember you are a visual!

  9. Don’ts of Visual Aids • Turn back to audience • Pass out objects while speaking • Cause the visual to compete with you as a speaker • Give your speech to your Visual Aid

Beginning and Ending Speeches • Very Important Components: The first thing you say and the last thing you say. • Begin by getting attention and engaging the audience. • Signal Conclusion • Conclude with impact and memorably • Takes some creativity and is often written after the rest of the speech • Techniques and examples to come!
