  2. Sparta Location • Sparta is located on the peninsula known as Peloponnesus. • Peloponnesus is an peninsula in southern Greece. • The Ionian Sea bordered the west side of Sparta and the Aegean Sea was on the east side.

Sparta Government • Sparta’s government was an oligarchy (2-3 people rule at the same time.) • Normally one would go off and fight wars while the other stayed home. • Providing a check on the kings' power was a group of five ephors, selected annually by the citizens. Each month the kings swore an oath to the ephors to sustain the city's laws; the ephors in turn swore to assist the kings. • They were in charge of legislative, judicial, financial, and executive duties. • Elected by the people. • Kings were automatic members of Gerusia, the council of 30 elders picked for life. It included 2 co-kings. They were chosen by citizens. 60 or older. • They acted like a Judicial government. • Pronounced sentences of death. • Apella-did the electing and was an assembly of male citizens. Any male citizens that were 30 years or older could participate at any time

Major Resources • Spartan citizens were debarred by law from trade or manufacture and were forbidden (in theory) to possess either gold or silver. • The Spartans were forbidden to trade or to learn any craft. • Young men were sent away into the country with nothing, and were expected to survive on wits and cunning. • Economy was rich enough to support a high level of training and equipment. • The State paid for the amour and equipment. • Perioeki produced the majority of the armour and manufactured goods. • Resources – iron, leather, wool, flax, pottery , bronze work, and dye from the murex molluscs.

  5. Geographic Features • Located near Evrotas River. • On the peninsula of Peloponnesus. • Near the Myroatan Sea. • Dirou is a cave near Sparta. • Dirou is located south of Areopolis. • Taygetus is the highest mountain. • Known as Pentadaktylos.

  6. Culture • Sparta was a very cruel life to live especially at young age. • Mostly focused on war. • Sparta boys left home to go train for war at the age of seven. • Sparta girls lived at home with their parents and learned to be tough with plenty of exercise. • All citizens of Sparta were tough. • Didn’t focus on education or family traditions/beliefs. • Didn’t use a religion or other beliefs.

  7. Interesting Facts • Sparta’s Greek name is Lacedæmon. • A popular dinner of Spartan warriors was melaszomos, or black soup, made from boiled pigs' blood, pork and vinegar.
