  2. abolition • the legal prohibition and ending of slavery

  3. American System • the policy of promoting industry in the U.S. by adoption of a high protective tariff and of developing internal improvements by the federal government (as advocated by Henry Clay from 1816 to 1828)

  4. Census • a count of the population

  6. emigrant • departing or having departed from a country to settle elsewhere

  7. factory system • the system of manufacturing that began in the 18th century with the development of the power loom and the steam engine and is based on concentration of industry into large establishments

  8. Industrial revolution • The change from a agrarian society to one based on industry which began in Great Britain and spread to the US around the 1800’s.
