  2. perspiration • The act of sweating. • Noun • The perspiration flowed down my face after running three miles.

  3. suffocate • To die from lack of air. • Verb • You will suffocate if you don’t get air into your body.

  4. cowlick • A projecting part of your hair that grows in a different direction as the rest of your hair. • Noun • I have a cowlick on the right side of my part. It drives me crazy, because it won’t do what it is supposed to do.

  5. quivering • To shake with slight trembling movements. • Verb • I was quivering after I almost got hit by a car.

  6. gingerly • With great care or caution • Adverb (notice the ly ending) • I gingerly touched the bruise on my leg to see if it still hurt.

  7. nonchalant • Seeming to be coolly unconcerned or indifferent. • Adjective • Some of you act nonchalant about the fact that you are failing and won’t be able to go on the end of the year field trip.

  8. rueful • Inspiring pity or compassion • Adjective • With a rueful look on her face, she turned to face her teacher.

  9. sage • Having or showing wisdom or calm judgment. • Adjective • Let me give you some sage advice. Some of you need to get your act together and start being responsible.

  10. elite • Selected as the best based on certain criteria • Adjective • The elite westside kids had it all: money, power, position.

  11. ornery • Mean-spirited; disagreeable. • Adjective • If you don’t have your final essay test for Watson’s, I am going to give you an ornery look.

  12. aloof • Distant physically or emotionally; reserved and remote • adjective • His aloof expression made people avoid him.

  13. gallant • unflinching in battle or action; lively and spirited; "a dashing hero“. • Adjective • The gallant man made the girls swoon.

  14. dumbfounded • As if struck dumb with astonishment and surprise. • Adjective • He looked at his teacher with a dumbfounded expression, when she said the final draft of the editorial is due next Wednesday.
