Research Priorities 2009 • Protective, risk, and resiliency factors for at-risk youth • What are the factors that most positively impact success? • Homeless students • Substance abuse prevention efforts for HS students • Impact of gangs on schools • Effect of attendance on student achievement • Teacher retention in DPS

  4. Research Priorities 2009 • Effectiveness of Freshman Academy • Language retention and grade correlation • IB longitudinal data analysis • Literacy • African-American Males • ESL Learners • Parent Outreach and Involvement • Pre-K Programming

  5. Pointers • Keep the application short and to the point! Please do not copy and paste large sections of proposals into the application. • Try not to choose a commonly researched topic. • Keep the focus very narrow. • Submit the proposal 3-4 months in advance. • Know the review dates!

  6. Pointers: Red Flags • Loss of instructional time • Large time commitment from teachers/staff • No direct benefit to the school or district (Adding to the general body of knowledge) • Not research based or best practice • Not in line with District goals • Cost to the District

  7. Benefits to Durham Public Schools • Integration with PLCs • Financial Incentives • Student programming provided at no cost • Training for teachers • CEUs for teachers
