  2. Introduction • The Masters in Education Leadership program has been aligned with the Georgia Leadership Institute for School Leadership (GLISI) eight roles for school leadership. Each course addressed the necessary skills required for effective school leadership. The standards and content of the courses prepares students to efficiently function as a data analysis, curriculum, assessment, instructional, performance, operations, relationship, process improvement, change, learning and development leader.

  3. Leadership Defined The capacity to establish direction and to influence and align others toward a common goal, motivating and committing them to actions and making them responsible for their performance.

Educational Leadership and Organizational Structure: Components of effective leadership • Leaders must act with moral purpose • Leaders must understand change • Relationship Building requires a leader to acknowledge the voice of staff • Coherence :one vision, one goal, one mission, shared by the team

The Human Dynamics of Leadership • The essence of leadership is motivating others to follow and achieve • Motivation theories explain why people behave as they do • Motivation is the reason or cause that produces some effect • Those who believe motivation is an external would ask-What can I do to motivate a person to work hard? • Those who believe that motivation comes from internal drives or needs would ask-What is the motivation that will cause a person to work hard?

What is an instructional leader? • The instructional leader makes instructional quality the top priority of the school and attempts to bring that vision to realisation. • learning leader • giving feedback, modeling effective instruction, soliciting opinions, supporting collaboration, providing professional development opportunities, and giving praise for effective teaching • resource provider , communicators, visible presence , instructional resource

  8. Mission and Vision Statements Vision Statements and Mission Statements are the inspiring words chosen by successful leaders to clearly and concisely convey the direction of the organization. By crafting a clear mission statement and vision statement, you can powerfully communicate your intentions and motivate your team or organization to realize an attractive and inspiring common vision of the future.

Budgets and FTE • The operating budget is usually represented based on a fiscal year July 1-June 30 • Budget primarily supports salaries and benefits approximately 82% • A full -time Equivalent (FTE) position is a personnel measurement of the workforce which constitutes a common denominator between full and part-time employment

GLISI’s Eight Roles • Data Analysis Leader: demonstrates the ability to lead teams to analyze multiple sources of data to identify improvement needs, symptoms and root causes • Curriculum, Assessment, Instruction Leader: demonstrate the ability to implement a systems approach to instruction in a standards-based environment prioritizing curriculum standards, developing aligned assessments and planning instruction to improve student achievement. • Performance Leader: demonstrate the ability to strategically plan, organize and manage school systems and processes necessary to improve student achievement • Operations Leader: demonstrates the ability to effectively and efficiently organize resources, processes and systems to support teaching and learning

GLISI Eight Roles • Relationship Leader: demonstrates the ability to identify and develop relationships among customer and stakeholder groups and communicate school goals and priorities focus on student learning • Process Improvement Leader: demonstrates he ability to identify and map core processes and results to create action plans designed to improve student achievement. • Change Leader: demonstrates the ability to drive and sustain change in a collegial environment focuses on continuous improvement in student achievement • Learning and Development Leader: demonstrates the ability to guide the development of professional learning and communities to develop leaders at all levels of the organization.

  16. Purpose of L-5 Certification • Career Goal • Learn and prepare for a career in a leadership position • Pursue a position as an Assistant Principal within 2-3 years.
