  2. What is the United Nations? Watch the video and think about... Why was it created? How was it established? In what ways does the UN help to keep the peace and support people around the world?

  3. Why do you think the United Nations has been successful while the League of Nations was not?

  4. What is the Model United Nations What is the Model UN? What does a delegate have to research in order to prepare for the conference? What do you think should be a topic to be discussed at the next United Nations meeting?

  5. Emergency Thousands of people are fleeing their homes in pursuit of safety and security. The United Nations Refugee Agency needs support to address this current refugee crisis. In addition, humanitarian assistance and collaboration are dire in the region. Will you help the UN support refugees?

  6. Background on the Emergency The world is witnessing the highest levels of human displacement on record. At least 79.5 million people around the world have been forced to flee their homes. Among them are nearly 26 million refugees, around half of whom are under the age of 18. There are also millions of stateless people, who have been denied a nationality and lack access to basic rights such as education, health care, employment and freedom of movement. 1 per cent of the world’s population have fled their homes as a result of conflict or persecution. Essential Questions to Consider Jamboard Activity • How can we prevent refugee crises (from war, environmental disaster, harsh governments etc) in the future? • What can the UN do to better to ensure that the rights of refugees are upheld in every country? • What support can countries give to refugees and their host countries? • Which countries should be responsible for supporting refugees and the countries that they are fleeing to?

  11. Your Job Today as a Delegate As a delegate, it is your job to understand the position of your country and its needs as well as the interests of those around you in order to create a quick and effective solution.

  12. Job as Delegate *Read your placard to find out more about the country you are representing! Answer the questions that follow using your placard. • Has your country ever been affected by a refugee crisis? • What is your country’s history of providing humanitarian support for refugees? • How can your country work with its allies to get the necessary resources for Syrian refugees? • What other countries can you work with to implement effective policy solutions to prevent increased conflict and violence in the region?

  13. Meet with your fellow country Delegates Use the padlet or breakout rooms to “discuss” the option(s) on the next slide that you think your country would most likely support after reading the placard on it.

Options to discuss with your delegate team: • All nations should contribute financially to the United Nations Refugee Agency • All nations should agree to host refugees in their country • All nations must agree to a uphold the Declaration of Human Rights. • All nations should send representatives to a United Nations Task Force that is dedicated to preventing the refugee crisis • Preventing civil war • Reducing climate change • Ensuring the rights of all citizens no matter what country they are from • Option of your choice.
