  1. Warm UP Answer the following question in the chat. What did Deza Malone do when life became hard for her when she did not receive the grade that she wanted on her paper? • She cried and laid her head down on her desk. • She toughened up and remembered the trick her brother said to do you want to change your grade. • She ran home to tell her mom how bad her grade was.

  2. Theme:The Mighty Miss Malone Deza Malone, a young African American girl during the Great Depression (1929-1939) encounters racism from her teachers and overcomes this obstacle by remaining positive about her own abilities, and spreads kindness and empathy to others around her.

These questions will help you to determine the THEME of the story. • How does Deza make the little boy from Flint, Michigan feel at home. • Why does Deza think that she is better off than this little boy? • How does Deza Malone cope with the racial injustice that occurred from her teacher? • What does Deza’s towards the little boy she meets in the camp reveal about her character?
