  9. Substitution Method to Solve Systems of Equations • use when #s are very big and won't fit on the graph • use when the lines do not intersect exactly on a grid point Example 1 y= 3x + 42 y= -4x -14 Example 2 y= 2x + 15 y= -3x - 24

  11. y= 3x + 42 y= -4x -14 y = y 3x + 42 = -4x - 14 +4x +4x add 4x to both sides 7x + 42 = -14 simplify -42 -42 subtract 42 from both sides 7x = -56 simplify x = -8 divide each side by 7 Plug x into either equation to find y. y = 3(-8) +42 y = -24 + 42 y = 18 Solution (-8, 18)

  14. y= 2x + 15 y= -3x - 20 y = y 2x + 15 = -3x - 20 +3x +3x add 3x to both sides 5x + 15 = -20 simplify -15 -15 subtract 15 from both sides 5x = - 30 simplify x = -7 divide both sides by 5 Plug x into either equation to find y. y = -3(-7) -20 y = 21 - 20 y = 1 Solution (-7, 1)
