Author/Poet, Nikki Giovanni READ ALOUD (Author Background) Nikki Giovanni, born 1943 calls herself a “Black American, a daughter, a mother, [and] a professor of English.” She is also the recipient of 25 honorary degrees, as well as an award-winning poet, writer, and activist who gives voice to issues of social justice and identity. In this poem, she adopts the persona of a “troubled little girl” in need of a book to demonstrate how reading can be a revolutionary act.

  3. Answer the following questions as a class. (Go Back to the previous slide if necessary) • Why do you think the author calls herself “Black American instead of African American? • What is social justice? • What does revolutionary mean? How can you tell?
