The Mighty Miss Malone is author Christopher Paul Curtis’s follow-up to 2000’s Newbery award-winning Bud, Not Buddy—both stories of young African Americans set in Great Depression-era Flint, Michigan. This time, 12-year-old Deza Malone—new in Flint from Gary, Indiana, where she was at the top of her class—is the narrator. When her father doesn’t return from a trip to find work, Deza, her brother Jimmie, and her mother go looking for him, journeying across the land by hopping aboard a boxcar. For a time, the Malones make their home outside of Flint, Michigan, in a “Hooverville,” a ragtag encampment of hoboes and wayfarers. When Deza begins again at a new school, her teachers, unlike her beloved former teacher Mrs. Needham, treat her unfairly because of her race. As this excerpt begins, Deza has been busying herself helping Stew, the woman in charge. I can: Characterize the narrator by using thoughts, actions and word choice.
