  1. My Experience MIGHTY WRITERS Natalie Cipolle

  2. Similar to the VideoCulture project, Mighty Writers is an informal educational setting. • The VideoCulture project was intended to be a simulated student production learning experience, whereas Mighty Writers is more of a simulated workshop where kids finish their homework and work on Mighty Writer’s written assignments. • Instead of having the Mighty Writer’s come to another classroom-type setting, where they endlessly work on more ‘assignments’, perhaps more engaging media-related activities could be incorporated. -Kids doing interviews on the Flip camera in Kenya -(German student feedback on Bea, Richard, and Sinead’s projects)

  3. Student production encourages them to “reflect on the choices they have made during the process.” • -Buckingham & Harvey • Reflection is one important method I have brought with me to Mighty Writers and have received positive student feedback.

  4. Buckingham and Harvey analyze the outcomes of Richard & Sinead’s project as well as Bea’s. • ******* • Bea’s film was more of a personal statement compared to Richard & Sinead’s which was a group effort. • ******* • “The fact that she did not have to negotiate with others allowed Bea a considerable freedom.”

  5. For MW future, I would hope to see a variation of projects (writing and media) that would incorporate group and single work with a strong emphasis on feedback from the student’s themselves and their peer’s. • “Thinking about their own interpretations of other people’s productions encouraged them to think about how other people would think about their projects.” -Buckingham & Harvey

  6. Levine commends the Teen Outreach Program (TOP) for their influence on service learning(combining community service and academic discussion). • “The TOP experiment provides evidence in support of the philosophy known as “positive youth development,” which emphasizes adolescents’ need to contribute their talents and energy.” -Levine • The article mentions that over half of American high schools use the service learning method and found positive effects on students’ civic attitudes, desire to volunteer, and academic success.

  7. I’ve noticed the Mighty Writer’s are • uninterested and lack motivation to • finish their MW assignments. • “Many students drop out because • the assigned work is boring and • because they lack personal • connections to teachers.” -Levine • Perhaps if the MW work differentiated • from their school work they would be • more eager to start, finish, and • be proud of their work.

  8. Levine’s article supports the idea that “schools will have to be restructured so that they function more like communities before youth media work is fully satisfying.” • Fortunately, Mighty Writers already functions like a community and I believe that integrating more media-based writing and learning projects would have a very positive outcome.
