  1. Paper Pets Each of you will create a paper pet. See teacher example. You will use principles of genetics to see how the following traits are inherited: gender, body color, eye shape, nose shape, tooth shape Students will use principles of genetics to see how traits are passed down from parents to offspring.

  2. Flip coin to decide traits. • Dominant traits(heads)Recessive traits (tails) • Blue body (BB, Bb)Orangebody (bb) • Round eyes (RR, Rr) Square eyes (rr) • Triangular nose (TT, Tt) Round nose (tt) • Pointy teeth (PP, Pp) Rectangular teeth (pp) • Male (xy) Female (xx) Flip coin a second time to determine if paper pet will be homogeneous or heterogeneous for each trait.

  3. Trace and cut out Paper Pet. • Write the following on the back: Pet’s name, Pet’s genotypes and phenotypes, and your name.

  4. Sit with partner • Fill out Punnett Square chart with partner. Color B female b b male b

  5. Number Punnet squares as below. • Use spinner to decide allele combination. • Record offspring phenotypes and genotypes on offspring chart. B b 2 1 b B b b b 3 4 b B b b b

  6. Finish creating offspring. • Fill out genotype charts

  8. Sit with partner. • Take out poster and Paper Pet packets. • Complete the Paper Pet Trait Write-Up sheet in your packet.
