Enhancing Digital Health in EAC through Human Capital Development. 1. Context & Goals: CEBE: Integrated CoE responding to Regional needs • CEBE constitutes a fully integrated part of a network of Centers of Excellence (CoEs) in biomedical sciences and engineering: • Focus areas per country • Nephrology and Urology in Kenya, • Oncology in Uganda, • Cardiovascular in Tanzania and • Biomedical engineering and e-health in Rwanda. GOAL: To build a critical mass of qualified workforce in priority areas such as biomedical engineering and e-Health with the aim of meeting East African Community (EAC) immediate and long-term labour market needs in the health sector

INTEGRATED APPROACH TO PROFESSIONAL TRAINING TRAINING ACTIVITIES – Biomedical Engineering PROFESSIONAL TRAINING IN BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING: Developed professional courses and trainings are to start in May 2019 • Health Technology Management (HTM) • Hospital Design • Service, Repair and Maintenance of Medical Equipment: Service, Repair and Maintenance of Medical Equipment covers: • Hospital Design, Respiratory, monitoring and cardiac equipment • Laboratory equipment • Maternity and neonatology equipment • Medical imaging equipment • Dental equipment • Ophthalmology equipment • Medical gases system
TRAINING ACTIVITIES – e-Health PROFESSIONAL TRAINING IN e-HEALTH Developed professional courses and training to start in June 2019 • Electronic Medical Record (EMR) Use and Management • Medical Coding • E-Health Software Development and Implementation • Security, Privacy and Legal Framework or e-Health Information Systems • Telemedicine Applications
TRAINING ACTIVITIES – eHealth Certification courses CERTIFICATION OF CEBE TO OFFER OPENCLINIC, OpenMRS and Digital Health Information System (DHIS2) To this end, the following was undertaken • Identified core software used in Healthcare settings in the EAC Region (Note: these software are part of the short courses to be delivered) • Negotiated certification of CEBE to offer short courses based on above-mentioned software with 3 Universities (Note: MoU signed with Univ. of Oslo, VUB and Washington University are in progress)
