  1. The Multi Cultural Kitchen ...

  2. The Multi Cultural Kitchen Taking a look at the multi cultural kitchen Chef Will Thornton FMP,CCE,CEC

  3. ABOUT ME MY STORY

  4. TODAY’S DISCUSSION • Who we are • Where we came from • Working with us • What we bring to the table • Why you should care

  5. ABOUT US • We are the person next door • Think back to all the kids you grew up with………….. • Red Neck Cherokees • People of humor • People of intuition • People of tolerance

  6. More About Us: • For the majority of multi-racial people, growing up associated with multiple races and cultures is enriching, rewarding, and contributes to healthy life view. • We get to take the best of both worlds and throw away the stuff we don’t like. • We also face a unique brand of prejudice….who ever heard of a blue-eyed blond haired Mexican named Thornton?

  7. More About Us: • DIFFERENT RELIGIONS • DIFFERENT SUPERSTITIONS • DIFFERENT CUSTOMS • DIFFERENT SENSES OF HUMOR(NO MAMA JOKES!!): WHAT IS SILLY TO YOU IS A BIG DEAL TO US…..fight’n words .. .....could be deadly

  8. Where we came from • The world • Just like your ancestors • Who can really say for certainty where their ancestors are from or even what race they are?

  9. Working with us • We aren’t talking about you……………………….OK sometimes we are…….but why get upset if you don’t know what we are saying?

  10. Working with us • Know we are a little different • We aren't what you expect • We have never really fit in anywhere but we tend to be good at temporary associations…just to try it out on the other side • This makes us great employees….the kitchen is like family……..and…good workers are always made to feel special and welcome…….so we stick around where we are wanted.

  11. What we bring to the table • A different view of: • Food (super important as chefs) • People • What ,when, why, and how things are and should be • Unique Abilities to cope and get along

  12. Keeping it real • Ha ha ha …….hey….is this joke about me? Is this how they see me? Should half of me be offended?………it was funny…..but ouch! • Even the people you love and that love you say some hurtful stuff • How many times have I heard …”you're half alright” • What if everyone were to marry someone from another race, religion,or status………I think I know this world…… and it is a more peaceful one.

  13. It all boils down to: • Your own views and prejudices…it is a small step to take ………a little hard for some…..A CHOICE YOU MAKE • For us there really isn't a choice….. • We are who we are…. and we are …..who we feel we are…. **We can’t control what others think we are or should be. **How does someone prove it to you?

  14. What you should do • Get a grip • This is not going away • Embrace the differences • It is more important now than ever……..don’t take the easy way • Value each other everyday…..we are all one another's gifts. • Welcome to my multi cultural world……….it’s yours too.

  15. Last Thought • It is appropriate that the kitchens be such a prime example of the melting pot……we are always stirring something up.
