  2. a. What characteristics are common to all living things? • Grow, reproduce, respond to the environment, Able to move, perform life processes (chemical reactions) to digest food & release energy (cell respiration & fermentation), build proteins, eliminate wastes

  3. . What are the 2 parts of a scientific name? • Genus and species • Which of the 2 is more general? • Genus is more general. Species is more specific.

  4. What characteristics are used to classify living things? • Physical traits, including those found inside the cell

  5. Who created the 7 layer system? • Carolus Linnaeus • Name the 7 layers. • Kingdom • Phylum • Class • Order • Family • Genus • Species

  6. What is a parasite? • Parasites live off of a host, harming the host in the process. • Why are the WOW Bugs considered parasites? • WOW Bugs live off of the bee larvae. They suck nutrients from the larvae, until the larvae dies.

What are the parts of a microscope, and the job of each? • Coarse adjustment knob (Finding object, initial focus); Fine adjustment knob (Fine tune focus to see different depths/different levels); Stage (Place slide on stage); Eyepiece ( Where you look into the scope); Objective lenses (magnification to see the object)

  8. How do you calculate magnification? • Objective lens times eyepiece

  9. What is the proper way to use/focus on an object using the microscope? • Start w/lowest power lens in place. Then place slide on stage • Focus using coarse adjustment. Fine tune as needed with fine adjustment • Switch to medium power. • Fine tune focus as needed with fine adjustment • Switch to high power. • Fine tune focus as needed with fine adjustment • When done, switch to low power before removing slide.

  10. How did Hooke & van Leeuwenhoek contribute to the development of the microscope? • Hooke: Invented compound microscope. Used it to discover cells, showing that detailed observations help scientific discovery van • Leeuwenhoek discovered many microscopic organisms, cells, and cell structures. He had a simple microscope, but better lenses.
