  1. Calling all Orion Middle School Readers: We are looking for students in grades 6-8 to compete in the first ever OMS Reader’s Bowl. Students will be placed on a grade level reading team (one of the Big 10 football teams (there are 12 teams in total—Illinois, University of Iowa, Purdue, Wisconsin, etc.) and will read 100 yards to the finish! Q-What is the time frame of the contest? A-The reading contest will start on Monday, October 31st and will end on Friday, December 16. Students will compete as teams and read according to their Lexile scores. Q-How do we move across the field? A-As you read, you will accumulate yards with points for completed books. If you read books in the upper half of your Lexilescore, you will earn 3 points per book. If you read books in the lower half of your Lexile score, you will earn 1 point per book. As a team, your goal is to read 100 points before the other 11 teams beat you to it! The team that is the farthest down the field by December 16th—with all of their reading bookmarks turned in will be the winner of the OMS Reader’s Bowl! Q-How will you know that we have read/completed books? A- As you read your book, you will fill out a reading strategies foldable bookmark so that you can demonstrate your knowledge of the book you have read. These will be turned into your team envelope in the office! (We will have your Lexile scores available to you, so that you can choose the books that you would like and earn the points you want to earn!) There is a different color for each grade level—these forms will be kept in the office and you may take one as soon as you turn in a completed one. Q-What is the reward? A-The winning team will have a super bowl party on Tuesday, December 20th during lunch and study hall time. The winning team will also earn an undisclosed Super Bowl PRIZE! You won’t want to be in any place but 1st!!!! Q-How do I sign up? A-Anyone interested in signing up may do so in the library, office or in your literature class. Q-What if I have other questions? A-See Mrs. Springer for details! Contest Dates: Oct. 31- Dec. 16 OMS READER’S BOWL
