  7. Project Status Religion project • PSD is collaborating with the American Theological Library Association • ATLA is coordinating with other associations organized around religion • Kick-off roundtable at ATLA on June 17th

  8. Formal Separation ofGenre/Form Thesaurus from LCSH • Title: Library of Congress Genre/Form Terms for Library and Archival Materials (LCGFT) • Developing a separate manual • Exploring whether LCGFT should be removed from Supplementary Vocabularies volume of LCSH • MARC source code: lcgft • New LCCN prefix: gf • Timeline: Late 2010 or early 2011

  9. Formal Separation ofGenre/Form Thesaurus from LCSH MARC coding • Authority records • 008/11: z (“Other”) • 040$f: lcgft • Bibliographic records • 655 #7 $a [Term.] $2 lcgft

  11. Formal Separation ofGenre/Form Thesaurus from LCSH • Second indicator “0” of 6xx block is defined for LCSH • PSD chose not to request that it be redefined in the 655 field • No other source indicator has two different meanings • Legacy data • Libraries continue to use LCSH in 655 field • Validation software must be able to match an assigned heading to a particular thesaurus • Second indicator “8” is defined locally by OCLC for the Sears List of Subject Headings for all 6xx fields except 655

  12. A FACETED SYSTEM

  13. Faceting: Coding single terms or phrases, representing individual concepts, separately in the bibliographic record

  14. A Faceted System • One concept per field provides predictability Animated western films Western animated films Children’s educational television programs Educational television programs, Juvenile Educational television programs—Juvenile works Juvenile educational television programs Western films Animated films Children’s television programs Educational television programs

  15. A Faceted System • Data is not repeated within a record • Descriptive elements, subject headings, genre/form terms all play their own roles • Individual pieces of data work together to provide a complete understanding of the work

  16. A Faceted System • If a characteristic is present in the descriptive portion of the record, it probably isn’t part of the genre or form, e.g., • Language: recorded in 008, 041, 130, 240, 546 • Place of production: recorded in 008, 257, 260 • Uniform title: recorded in 130, 240

  21. Future Systems • Will retain ability to browse LCSH and LCGFT headings • Each facet will be provided as a search limit or expansion • Predictability in coding and format of genre/form terms will assist in computer parsing

  22. Future Systems

  23. Future Systems • “Refine my results” in University of Minnesota Libraries’ MNCAT Plus Availability Library Material type Other libraries Author/creator Genre/form Subject Call number group Date Language

  24. Future Systems • Additional facets possible • Country of production • Medium of performance • Carrier

  25. Future Systems • Walking a tightrope • Maintain usable data for today, while creating data for tomorrow • The chicken or the egg?
