  2. Content • Projects • Slides 2-16 show abstracts of projects that have been completed in the past, and for which there are reports . • Slides 17 – are new projects

  3. Implementation of Discrete Wavelet Transform on FPGAS. Raghaav, S. Pulipaka • Abstract • In this project an algorithm for the Haar Transform is analyzed, a signal processing model for audio compression is described and the model is implemented on Altera’s DSP builder, With the algorithm of Haar transform it is possible to concentrate the power of the complete signal in a smaller sample size. Results show that the wavelet transform of audio signal increases its transmission efficiency and its implementation on and FPAG is hardware efficient.

  4. GPS Receiver – Satellite AcquisitionC. Doshi • Describes the basic GPS concepts and implementation and shows code format. Also show the receiver design considerations and s Simulink model of the system.

  5. 8-bit Pipelined Analog to Digital Converter using FPGA Correction Technology • Abstract • An 8-bit (1.5 bits per stage) pipelined analog to digital converter using FPGA correction technology is studied. In this paper we introduce the evolution of pipelined A/D converter. We build the Simulink model and write the VHDL code for the digital correction part and the download to the Altera FPGA.

  6. OFDM System Implementation with FPGAsX. Hu • Abstract • In this project we implement an FPGA based OFDM modulation system. We described the required operations and show the code for the simulation

  7. Non-linear Cochlea SimulationJ. Shah, N. Shah • Abstract • This paper implements a nonlinear circuit model of a cochlea to model the behavior. A Simulink simulation is developed which includes several nonlinear mechanisms.

  8. Implementing Parallel Matrix Computations on the FPGAS. Burintramart • Abstract • Implementation of matrix computations on the FPGA is discussed in this paper. A parallel structure of the FPGA is utilized in the implementation to increase its speed of operation. A state machine approach is used ot make the device programmable. The instructions set that support parallel processing for matrix computations is introduced. The concept is confirmed with Altera hardware.

  9. Blind Source SeparationC. Zang, et al • Abstract • As a promising technique, blind source separation (BSS) is receiving much attention. In this paper we investigate two BSS algorithms: J-H and EVD using the Simulink platform. We consider independent component analysis and decorrelation based on second order statistics. The difference is discussed.

  10. Polynomial Approximation using Cordic Algorithm and Matlab’s Polyfit FunctionV. Neelakantan, et al • Abstract • This project deals with the implementation of the CORDIC algorithm using Matlab and a comparison with Matlab’s polyfit function for the approximation of a Square root. The purpose is to find the most efficient FPGA implementation.

  11. Matrix Inversion using Householders and System CK. Swarna • Abstract • Here we review System C and its use in performing matrix operations on an FPGA. Detailed examples are presented.

  12. Effects of Lagged Nonlinear Calculations in Euler’s Method for Hardware Accelerated State Space SimulatorM. McKeon • Abstract • This paper discusses the application for and FPGA based implementation for simulating arbitrary circuits and focuses on efficient processing on nonlinearities. We focus on the simulation time delay created when processing nonlinearities and the effect on simulation accuracy.

  13. FPGA Design Implementations:VHDL vs. Xilinx System Generator • Abstract • A detailed review of the design methodology, advantages and disadvantages of each approach is presented. Examples of each design style are given.

  14. 10 Gigabit Ethernet Interface – Stream Processor • Abstract • In this paper I will explain the solutions provided by Altera and Xilinx. Altera provides a complete Media Access Controller (MAC) for a variety of chip-to-chip, backplane and cable applications using the XAUI protocol as the basis. Xilinx provides Ethernet MAC functions used to interface to Physical Layer devices. The stream processor operates of the data before it is stored in the buffer.

  15. Automatic HDL Code Generation Methods for Signal Processing Applications. R. Renganathan • Abstract • This paper presents the overview of the features supported by HDL Generation Tools in implements a few simple designs to understand the working structure of these tools. Both Altera and Xilinx are considered.

  16. Frequency Shifting with FPGAs – Listening to Elephants W.C. Tetley • Abstract • Elephants communicate via sound wave in the range 10-500 Hz. This is below the range of normal human hearing. The main part of the work is to implement a Hilbert Transformer on an FPGA. The purpose is to shift the sounds into the range of human hearing.

  17. Rank Detector • Abstract • Detectors are usually based on that the data are governed by known probability distributions; Gaussian, e.g. However it is possible to avoid such an assumption by basing detection on the order statistics of the data. In this project we design a detector that has constant false alarm rate and a probability of detection that depends only on the statistical difference between the data for ‘signal’ and ‘no signal’

  18. Environmental Monitor • Abstract • The frequency of a quartz crystal oscillator is known to be a function of the mass of the crystal. This phenomenon can be used to design an environmental sensor by coating the crystal with a material that will absorb specific materials. The rate of absorption (and hence the frequency change) is a function of the concentration of the specific material of interest present at the surface of the crystal.

  19. Digitally Controlled Power Supplies • Abstract • SMPS (switched mode power supplies) feedback loops are typically designed conservatively so the closed-loop regulation and stability margins are maintained over expected ranges of operation conditions. Of particular interest is maintenance of operating parameters in the presence of input disturbances. An adaptive tuning system based on desired phase margin is one method of control.

  20. Chaos Communications • Abstract • A chaotic signal is divided into orthogonal segments using Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization to form a set of waveforms that can be used in a secure spread spectrum communication system.
