  1. Unit 2 Growth 1863 – New York City Draft Riots And Conflict 1963 – Mississippi Race Riots In the United States

  2. America’s size grew as it purchased land from France. It was known as the Louisiana Purchase. It gave America the land between the banks of the Mississippi to the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains.

  3. One way machines shaped our nation was in the area of work. This led to important changes in industry.

  4. Another way machines shaped our nation was to connect major cities and move people and goods faster.

  5. And of course, the car and truck are still as popular now for connecting major cities and moving people and goods faster as they were in 1900 (top) and 1930 (below).

  6. Prior to the Civil War, the country was torn apart. The Fugitive Slave Act increased the argument over slavery. Thousands became abolitionists and helped slaves escape.

  7. President Lincoln Sojourner Truth Abolitionistshelped slaves escape.

  8. Slavery and the election of Abraham Lincoln resulted in southern states seceding from the Union to form the Confederacy. They attacked Fort Sumter to begin the Civil War, in 1861.

  10. In 1803, France sold land to the United States, and it was known as the Louisiana Purchase. It was explored between 1804 – 1806 by Lewis and Clark, and at times led by Sacagawea.
