  1. Heredity Disease Lesson 2 Ch 18

  2. What are genes? • Genes control the activities of cells and determine a person’s physical characteristics. • Genes are passed from parents to offspring. • Color of eyes, hair, height, build…

  3. What is a heredity disease? • Any gene, given by one or both parents, to the child that is defective. • For instance, sickle cell disease are caused by changes to one gene. Breast and Colon cancer may involve more than one gene. Down syndrome is the result of a person being born with par or all of an extra chromosome “21”

  4. How many chromosomes do humans have? • Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes… half from father and mother.

  5. Living with hereditary Diseases • Doctors can test for many diseases. • Many times problems can be reduced if caught early enough or given help, proper diet, or medication. • These diseases can not be cured.

  6. Metabolic and Nutritional Diseases • What is matabolism? • It’s the process by which the body converts the energy in food into energy the body can use. • This process happens after digestion.

  7. Metabolic Disease • If a body can’t metabolize something it needs to survive, then you have a metabolic disease. • Some problems begin before birth and sometimes after. • Heredity, Drugs, Medication, and Diet are the main risk factors.

  8. Common Metabolic Diseases • PKU: Heriditary and person needs to follow a low protein diet • Diabetes: Can be caused for a number of reasons. Your body’s pancrease doesn’t work properly to metabolize glucose. • Rickets: Too little Vitamin D and too little Vitamin A causes blindness, but too much V-A causes liver disease and hair loss.

  9. Nutrition and Health • The more balanced you diet the less of a chance you will get a metabolic disease • Eating the right amount of food is also important because eating too much can lead to disease • Choosing foods low in fat, sugar and salt helps. • Exercise is also part of the equation;-)
