  2. AGENDA • Complete the Quickquiz. • Keep reading! • Keep track of characters and their actions as we read.

  3. What a crazy family! • Complete the family tree.

  4. Background information on the play, The Lion in Winter • The year is 1183. • Henry II (Henry Plantagenet) is the king of England and has been for many years. He says that he is “the greatest power in a thousand years.” • Henry is married to Eleanor, who was the richest woman in France and was the Queen of France before she was annulled and married Henry.

  5. Background information on the play, The Lion in Winter • Henry’s oldest son, Henry the Young King, was the heir to Henry’s throne before he died. • Now, Henry wants his youngest son, John, to inherit his throne. Eleanor, however, wants their oldest son, Richard to get the kingdom.

  6. Background information on the play, The Lion in Winter • To make matters more confusing, Alais, who is engaged to Richard, has been sleeping with Henry for seven years. • Richard doesn’t really care, but Alais’s brother Philip, the King of France does. • Philip doesn’t really care about Alais freaking Henry; what he wants is Alais to be married to Richard or Henry to give back Alais’s dowry, a county called the Vexin.

  7. DEFINITIONS • Primogeniture: the system of inheritance or succession by the firstborn child, specifically the eldest son. • How do you feel about this system? Is it still in place now?

  8. DEFINITIONS • Dowry: the money, goods, or estate that a wife brings to her husband at marriage. • Traditionally, the wife’s parents pay for their daughter’s wedding. Do you agree or disagree with this tradition?

  9. DEFINITIONS • Allusion: an implied or indirect reference to a person, event, thing or idea that the writer assumes the reader will understand. • My brother was Romeo to her Juliet.
