  2. Today’s Essential Questions • What are the School Keys? • Why is the Implementation Resource a valuable tool? • How do we utilize School Keys for school improvement?

  3. Essential Question #1 • What are the School Keys?

  4. Just as the GPS provides the guidance and structure for classroom practice and instruction, we have a tool to provide that level of structure at the school and system level: The Georgia School Keys

  5. The School Keys describe what Georgia’s schools should know, understand, and be able to do in the same manner that Georgia Performance Standards describe what students should know, understand, and be able to do.

  6. GAPSS Analysis The School Keys serve as a tool for all schools in the state. They are best utilized when combined with data collected using the Georgia Assessment of Performance on School Standards (GAPSS Analysis) instruments. The GAPSS Analysis compares the progress of a school against each of the school keys to determine needs for school improvement.

  7. The School Keys Research Base The School Keys are intended to serve as descriptors of effective, high impact practices for schools. The Division of School and Leader Quality, along with its collaborative partners, aligned the School Keys with the research of Dr. Robert Marzano in the meta-analysis, What Works in Schools (2003), School Leadership that Works (Marzano, Waters, and McNulty, 2003), and the standards of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).

  8. The School Keys Research Base The eleven factors identified by Dr. Marzano were combined with the research of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS/CASI) to arrive at the eight broad strands included in the Georgia School Keys.

  9. Factors Affecting Student AchievementWhat Works in Schools (Marzano, 2003)

  10. Translating Research Into ActionWhat Works in Schools (Marzano, 2003) “Schools that are highly effective produce results that almost entirely overcome the effects of student background.”

  11. Eight Strands of the Georgia School Keys 1. Curriculum 2. Instruction 3. Assessment 4. Planning and Organization 5. Student, Family, and Community Support 6. Professional Learning 7. Leadership 8. School Culture
