  3. Key Sentence “Anyway, I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all. Thousands of little kids, and nobody's around - nobody big, I mean - except me. And I'm standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff - I mean if they're running and they don't look where they're going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That's all I'd do all day. I'd just be the catcher in the rye and all.” --- p.156 J.D. Salinger • Analogy to myself: • I like to help others • be available for my friends when they need me • enjoy having friends around • don’t want to be prominence from the others, prefer to be “part of the group” • I like to rate other people in the view of my own opinion • taking care of weaker and younger kids

  4. - Teenager confusion, angst, alienation, profanity, sexuality, teenage angst - Complex issues of identity, belonging, connection, and alienation - How to become more mature, serious and independent - People acquire more knowledge that will help him understand and resist the challenges that life will give them - Like a new chapter in a book - New challenges but also new chances - Teenagers like to use profanity – vulgar words – like a battle call The problematic to be a Teenager?

  5. A lot of things change in the puberty. Girls think they are more grown up and start to act silly and stupid, but boys do the same only a bit later. Official definition Puberty: It is initiated by hormone signals from the brain to the gonads. In response, the gonads produce a variety of hormones that stimulate the growth, function, or transformation of brain, bones, muscle, blood, skin, hair, breast and sex. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puberty But what does this mean in my opinion? During the puberty a kid learns to take responsibility for others and behaves different. Often teenagers struggle with their unknown future, they take most things much to serious. 10. "People always clap for the wrong things." (p77) “The Navy guy and I told each other we were glad to've met each other. Which always kills me. I'm always saying »Glad to've met you« to somebody I'm not at all glad I met. If you want to stay alive, you have to say that stuff, though" (p79) "I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes. That way I wouldn't have to have any goddam stupid useless conversations with anybody. If anybody wanted to tell me something they'd have to write it on a piece of paper and show it over to me. They'd get bored as hell doing that after a while, and then I'd be through with having conversations for the rest of my life" (p178) "Don't ever tell anybody anything. If you do, you start missing everybody“ (p.214) My favored quotes:

  11. How do you feel when you read Holdens thoughts? Is this the same vocabulary you would use to describe a few days of your life? As it is written 1951 (60 years ago) do you think it is still up to date? What do you think about Pencey Prep, are our schools now a days similar? Compare Holdens friends and schoolmates with our actual society – are there any similarities or what are the differences? Describe why and how Holden changes his mind? Do you think the book has a happy end and does it make sense to you? What does Holden mean when he calls people „phonies“? Questionstobediscuss….
