Designing the Library Media Space By Kim Kadeem
If this were your LMC, what do you think would be the positive and/or negative of this design layout?
Physical attributes of an effective LMC There are areas for: • Group studying, • Gathering and socialization • Presentations and lectures • Special projects • Dedicated media or technology areas
Open spaces with fewer corridors and partitions eliminates nooks & crannies that create hiding spaces and other security concerns • Glass walls can provide acoustic privacy while enhancing sight lines and security. • Transparency between public and semi-private spaces can reveal a spark of life within facilities
The LMC program (mission and goals) Eight elements that ensures a strong school program: • a professionally trained, full-time teacher librarian • Adequate support staff • A strong collection (books, periodicals, online databases and references) that meet the needs of the schools instructional program • Students’ access to library resources and information within and beyond the physical library space
A teacher-librarian who communicates and collaborates with teachers • A teacher-librarian who assists teachers in using information technology • A teacher-librarian who teaches students information literacy skills • The rich diverse resources, flexible spaces, technological tools and the expertise of the teacher-librarian provide a goldmine of assistive choices for teachers and students.
Does the room make the library or the library make the room?
