  1. What Are The New York CLE Requirements? The law states specific New York CLE Requirements for newly-admitted lawyers. They must mandatorily complete CLE-specific credit hours during the first two years, just after admission to the Bar. Before the first year ends, they need to complete the following CLE Requirements: Three transitional credit hours in Ethics and Professionalism Six credit hours in Skills, and Seven credit hours in Law Practice Management. It could be a professional practice area too. The newly-admitted attorneys must complete the same number of credit hours in Ethics and Professionalism, Skills, and Law Practice Management during the next year. That is a total of 16 transitional credit hours of CLE per year. The other mandatory New York CLE Requirements include:  Lawyers will get credit for courses that have been accredited, and Commission for CLE approved. Attorneys who are keen to attend a non-accredited course, it is important that they submit an application to the Commission for accreditation.

  2. If attorneys need to get their sponsors approved, they need to apply to the Commission separately. Sponsors are organizations that facilitate approved and accredited CLE courses every year. What does transitional CLE Continuing Legal Education Courses required by newly-appointed attorneys? The objective is to offer and strengthen the base of newly-appointed lawyers in the three areas of skills, professionalism, and Law Practice Management. Only an accredited sponsor can inform the attorneys about which of their courses are transitional. How to Choose the Right New York CLE Course? It is best to cross-check with the local bar organization or association in your area. You could also alternately check with the NY Accredited Provider List to find CLE providers approved and accredited by the CLE Board. Ensure that the course is accredited by the NY CLE Board or features under the New York’s Approved Jurisdiction Policy. If not, you would need to submit an accreditation application to the Board.
