Explore the fascinating world of evolution through the chronological order of biologic events, the theory of evolution, species definition, and the impact of adaptations on survival. Learn about famous scientists, such as Gregor Mendel and Charles Darwin, and the concept of natural selection. Engage in a moth activity to understand how adaptations like camouflage and mimicry can aid in survival. Join the hunt for camouflaged moths and witness the "survival of the fittest." Thursday, April 4th Warm-Up • Put the biologic events in chronological order and number them #1-5. • Invertebrates thrive • Dinosaurs dominate • Amphibians evolve • Bacteria appear • Birds and mammals evolve Agenda • Intro to Evolution Notes • Moth Activity Homework • FINISH Part 2 Vocab – Due TOMORROW!
What is a Species? • Species – A group of organisms that are able to produce offspring that are healthy and capable of reproducing together.
What is Evolution? • Evolution – A change in the inherited traits of a species from one generation to the next. • Every organism has unique DNA, which makes some organisms better suited to environmental changes than others. • Organisms that cannot adapt to their environment will NOT survive.
Extinction • If all the organisms within a species are unable to adapt to an environmental change, the species will become extinct. • Extinction – when all of the organisms within a species die.
Scientists who studied Evolution • Gregor Mendel • “Father of Genetics” • Studied how traits are passed down from one generation to the next in pea plants. • Charles Darwin • Studied how organisms within a species change when they move to new environments.
“Survival of the Fittest” • Natural Selection- Animals develop traits over time in order for the species to survive.
Adaptations • Adaptations – a beneficial trait that helps an organism survive in its environment. • Examples: • Camouflage • Mimicry • Hibernation
Camouflage • When an animals physical appearance blends in with its environment.
Mimicry • When an animal mimics or imitates another animal in order to survive. • The milk snake mimics the colors of the poisonous coral snake.
Moth Activity • What adaptation would a moth use to avoid predators if it lived in this classroom?
Moth Activity • What adaptation would a moth use to avoid predators if it lived in this classroom? Camouflage
Moth Activity • Design and color a moth that would blend in somewhere in the classroom. • Write your name on the back of the moth. • You CANNOT hide them INSIDE or UNDER something… they must be visible, but blend in with the background. • Tomorrow, we will tape them up and the next class will “hunt” for the moths. • The moths that are NOT found are the “fittest” and will receive a Bonus Buck!
Friday, April 5th Warm-Up • Turn in Vocab during warm-up time. Choose ONE question: • What does Natural Selection mean? • Name one adaptation and describe how it helps an organism survive in its environment . Agenda • Tape Moths up • Moth Hunt • Walking with Dinosaurs
