  14. Biodiesel Project Strategic Energy Innovations

  15. Lucas Altic New Leaf Biofuel is a San Diego-based biodiesel production company, providing our community with an environmentally sound vehicle fuel source. They make high-quality biodiesel, which can fuel diesel vehicles with little or no conversion, from waste cooking oil collected from area restaurants.

  16. Lucas Altic Lucas Altic is the Plant Manager of New Leaf Biofuel in San Diego, CA. Lucas started his career in biofuels, and specifically biodiesel production, in 2005. Since that time, he has served in many technical roles including QC/QA, plant and facility maintenance, process automation engineering, project management and engineering, process design, process and plant management, and safety and environmental compliance. He was worked for or consulted with biodiesel facilities throughout Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, and California. Most recently, his role as Plant Manager of New Leaf has resulted in his involvement with process and throughput improvement efforts which have resulted in a nearly doubling of production output within 18 months; accreditation of New Leaf under the BQ-9000 Producer program, the industry’s voluntary quality assurance program; and the launch of a grant-funded multi-million dollar capacity expansion deploying advanced biofuel manufacturing technology. Lucas received a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering degree in 2004 from the University of South Florida and a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering degree from the same university in 2010. Lucas lives with his wife and 3 children in San Diego, CA.

  50. The Presentation Title Goes Here Food vs. Fuel • Primarily a myth • Biodiesel actually increases the food supply • US corn crop grew by 35% during the same years that the ethanol industry tripled its capacity • Net increase of 26% due to distiller’s grain • Only 30% of the 800 million acres of farmland are actually used to grow food • Commodity prices do noticeably affect finished food prices (cost of a box of Corn Flakes is 8 cents) – fuel prices do!
