  1. Lifelong learning in Makerere University • There are learning arrangements that can be classified as lifelong learning although presently they are not described as such in university policy documents. • The only area in which lifelong learning is appearing visibly is in the name of the school I am heading, “The School of Distance and Lifelong Learning.” This is a new development that came early this year 1st Feb 2011.

  2. Provisions for Lifelong Learners in Makerere University • Makerere University will be 90 years old in the coming year 2012 having started in 1922 • In Makerere University, the manifestation of lifelong learning comes in the forms of: • Multiple entry schemes (admission) • Mature age entry schemes (for people above the age of 25 years) • Diploma entry schemes (people with Diploma) • Direct entry schemes through A-levels UNEB exams (open to all) • Flexible learning time provisions. • Day time study programmes • Evening time study programmes • Distance Education programmes • Community engagement (service learning and short courses)

  3. Programmes for non-traditional students • It was in 1995 that the University Council sanctioned evening courses for all faculties, and today nearly all schools in the university run evening programmes. • However, all programs are available to all categories of students including young students from A-level. • The non-traditional students are also free to join the full time days time study programs unders a study leave arrangements. • There is also Distance Education programme (four programmes of B.Com, B.Ed, Bsc, DCYP) • As already stated above, these provision are not restricted to non-traditional students only because even those from A-level are admitted to them. • Any students on the non-regular study programmes is defined as a non-traditional students or Part Time study students because their learning provision is different from the regular full time study programmmes.

  4. Challenges and opportunities for Part Time and Distance Education learners at Makerere University • These different programs provisions present different kinds of challenges and opportunities for both the students, teachers and the Institutions. • The challenges also differs according to gender • In this presentation, I am not going to discus these opportunities and challenges according to the different stakeholders. I intend to have a rather general discussion.
