Introduction • Largest hospital in the Seattle metropolitan area • over 500 administrators, 300 physicians, 3,200 nurses and nursing assistants • oversee 90,000 patients a year • over 5,042 web pages on our intranet site for our 7,000 users • intranet - most common means for 80% of our employees to access information Paul
The People • Administrators • Physicians • Nurses • Nursing Assistants • Non-clinical staff Paul
The Architecture • Databases • Our four major databases for the intranet site are human resources, payroll, library, feedback, and news • CMS (a content management server) • Stores internal documents • Checks out documents • Allows authorized individuals to make changes to documents • Intranet • The internal website of Alpha Hospital in which individuals can browse general and individual information Paul
The Challenge • Majority of users are not technically savvy • Different policies apply to different work forces • For example, nurses do not start accruing vacation immediately. Instead they get a vacation dump after 6 months of service. • Majority of new hires benefits do not start until the 1st of the following month. For example, an employee hired on 2/15, her benefits will start on 3/1. • Except for residents, their benefits start on the date of hire • Disparate data sources from various legacy databases Paul
