  1. 1st – Identify the Learning Needs Professional Training

  2. Introduction The purpose of the first lesson is to Know the student Let the student know you too Identify student’s learning needs Set a draft plan on the future tutorials Duration: 1hr

  3. Get to know each other In order to tutor a student well, you need to have a good and positive working relationship with the student. Without it, student can learn nothing from the tutor. The student is usually a bit nervous about the whole thing. They may think how to respond to you for a whole week before the first tutorial. So greet to him when meet talk at a moderate speed (if you’re “fast talker”, slow down a bit) look at him while talking. smile (the best and cheapest strategy)

  4. Get to know each other(cont…) Typical questions you may ask the student what subjects he’s doing what are his favourites what the school is like? etc.

  5. Identify Learning Needs Student often doesn’t know what his learning needs are. They just need a tutor. This is tutor’s responsibility to help them find out their learning needs, which then you two can work towards. How to identify the learning needs then? By asking, LISTENING and repeating.

  6. Identify Learning Needs(cont…) You ask the following questions, wait and listen to the response, repeat occasionally what the student says to help them come up more. Typical questions, for example: How do you like the subject? What do you like or dislike about it? What result did you get last year and this year? (Don’t judge on the results) Which part of the subject do you find it most difficult? How is the class in general? etc

  7. Set a draft learning plan Once you worked out what the student really needs, you can then set up a learning plan with the student. The learning plan may address: How to tackle the most difficult aspects of this subject How to revise VCE subject (you have the experience they desperately need) How often to have tutoring? How long for each tutorial session

  8. “Feed” the student After the draft plan, help the student with the subject. Help him/her tackle any problems they may have in that subject. Make sure they can learn and get something out from the first lesson.
