  3. Next Generation Semantic Web Applications Smart Features NG SW Application Semantic Web • Able to exploit the SW at large • Dynamically retrieving the relevant semantic resources • Combining several, heterogeneous Ontologies • Need tools and infrastructures to efficiently access the knowledge available on the SW: a Gateway…

  4. A Gateway to the Semantic Web

  5. Watson Architecture Collecting Analyzing request Crawling Parsing (Jena) Validation/ Analysis Indexing W W W populates populates populates populates extracted discovered retrieved used URLs Repository Metadata Indexes Querying queries queries queries queries queries SPARQL Query Ontology Exploration Keyword Search

  6. Collecting and Analyzing Knowledge • Specialized crawlers for ontology repositories and semantic relations. • Watson has collected tens of thousands of semantic documents. • This represents Millions of RDF entities, most of them being instances. • New sources of knowledge are frequently integrated (FOAF, DBPedia, etc.), so that this number is growing rapidly.

  7. Analyzing Semantic Content Size Coverage Richness • Have to deal with Heterogeneity! Great variety in… Etc.

  8. Interfaces, Demos and Applications… Interfaces: WUI Web User Interface:http://watson.kmi.open.ac.uk/WatsonWUI

  9. Web services and API Watson Server Semantic Web Application Ontology Search Service Semantic repository Metadata repository Indexes Watson API Entity Search Service SOAP • Allows applications developers to access Watson features, and so the collected knowledge, in a lightweight way. • But what applications (can) do with it?

  10. Applications Folksonomy Enrichment PowerAqua: Question Answering Protégé and NeOn Toolkit plugin: Knowledge reuse PowerMagpie: Semantic Browsing Ontology Matching, etc…

  11. Final Message • Watson is an ongoing project to build a Gateway to the Semantic Web • Usable Now! • But lost of directions for improvements So… Use it! Show it! Torture it! Build new applications with it! And… Send feedbacks! Suggest new features! Suggest new applications!
